The hold button only needs to be held down to place the call on hold. Once the phone is on hook the loop current will flow through D1 LED1 R1 and SCR1.
A suggested modification is what is known in the telephone world as a polarity guard. A polarity guard is bridge rectifier between the telephone line and the polarity sensitive circuit. |

Does the button need to be held down for the call to remain on hold or just while the phone is being hung up? |

(In reply to GRREG):
This circuit simply maintains the line's 'busy' state so that the caller is not disconnected. It does not actually provide any means for transmitting audio signals along the line.
The circuit itself can be quite useful, although I personally prefer a PBX system with which I may taunt telemarketers with looping menus >:) |

This would seem to also work as a "Off Hook" or "Do Not Disturb" device. Just press the button to make your phone "off hook" without hearing a dial tone and alert tone. Just pick up a phone to reset it. |

I'm going to make a hold button that when pressed plays the boring hold music of my choice from a tape recorder (I will have to rewind the tape each time I put someone on hold though) |
