| I found this circuit in my files. I don't know where it came from, but it looks like I photocopied it from somewhere years ago. I have been told that it came from "The Robot Builder's Bonanza", by Gordan McComb. Anyway, I thought that it should be fairly useful, so I decided to post it here. The circuit is very simple and inexpensive. This is good thing because most commercial stepper motor controller ICs are quite expensive. This circuit is built from standard components and can easily be adapted to be controlled by a computer. If you use cheap surplus transistors and stepper motor, the price of the circuit can be kept to under $10. |

| this is a very useful article about stepper motor. i just want to point out an italian tutorial about stepper motor: http://it.emcelettronica.com/motori-passo-passo-stepper-motor thank you! | ||
| i dont understand all that commnets 'cause there's alot question but no answer ?_?. this circuit needs more explaination.
i'm answering as i know,
1- this circuit can drive directly UNIPOLAR stepper but not BIPOLAR.
2- if you want to drive bipolar u need a "H bridge" circuit.
and my question;
how sould i wire the unipolar stepper to continuously, step by step move. ( when i wired it randomly it started to turn freakly)
(Editor's notes: As the comments form says, comments really aren't for asking questions. Try posting in the forum.) |

| Hii i am using the inkjet printer stepper motor(12V and 0.9A) for controlling my robot. But recently my two motors are damaged. I am using Programmable Logic Controller(PLC) to control the this motor and giving the 12 V supply. is it because i give 2A current. Thanks in advance | ||
| Please, correct page name - this circuit is for unipolar stepper only. For bipolar stepper you will need H-bridge circuit. | ||
| can anyone plz tell me how to connect a 4-phase motor to the above circuit.that circuit is currently not working properly it is kind of dancing. Its funny but its true.plz reply fast with a wire configuration.Ineed to submit this project within 2 WEEKS time. The one who solves this problem will get my blessings.INSHA ALLAH!!! | ||

| I have a stepper motor from sanyo denki (Made in Japan). Its Type number is 103H8582-8044, 1.5A, 0.72 degrees. It is having 5 wires(Blue, Black, Red, Yellow, and Orange). I dont know the sequence to run it continuously. All the poles are working but i am not able to get the continuous rotation. Please help me soon. I need to finish my final year project in1 week. please reply soon. | ||

| Hello I looking for a vary simple stepper motor controller. I making a label despiser it will be dive by a stepper motor the motor will pull out the about 5" by just one push s/w and each time you hit the s/w the label will move out and stop every 5". the paper waste will be raped up by the stepper motor it came out of a old printer 4 wire can you help me out | ||
| If the CD-Rom motor has only three wires, then would it be a stepper motor? Just reading this page http://www.flyelectric.ukgateway.net/cdrom.htm here, it would seem as if they arent stepper motors. Try opening broken flatbed scanners, printers, of floppy drives for a stepper motor i think... but i dont have any experience with this | ||
| Excuse me, im new at this(making my first motor). Can someone tell me if i can use this circuit to control the stepping motor at 3 different frequencies. | ||
| Thanks for posting this circuit! I was looking for a cheap, simple stepper driver and this is perfect for my needs. I just tried it on a breadboard and manually stepped through a couple of revolutions forward and back. All of the parts for four of these was less than $15 from digikey. Thanks again! | ||

| Well I made this too, but it isn't working. I have the same problem as @Santiago | ||
| Can the circuit be modified to drive a brushless dc motor? | ||
| this looks great. probably the cheapest driver i have found. thank you will use on my next cnc project | ||
| To Santiago: I am not try this circuit yet, but it seems it work. You must know: This is for Stepper Motor, if you want to try, just touch the step to the ground/zero a few times (on-off-on-off-on-off ...) it should make the motor move. If the motor not move in one direction, try to switch the coil connection (A to C or perhaps to B). Have a nice try.... | ||

| hi! i just wanted to know how a stepper motor can be made to behave like a PMDC motor! | ||
| for the last posting plzzzzzzzz I'm guessing that you want to be able to use your computer tp power the stepper. Desktop works fine, make sure if you try to use your laptop that you have min 5v +/- on your printer port. Otherwise the program will run but stepper wont move. Ask away Rick | ||

| hi first question: i want to drive this controller with a picbasic and i need to know how long is the pulse ps: a pulse is a 1-0-1 or 0-1-0 sequence, isn't it? 2nd question: looking TIP31 datasheet, i see that the collector-emitter voltage is 40v min to 100v max and 12v is not in this range. Do you have another reference for a 12v collector-emitter voltage? | ||

| how could i get the controller device..i'am from MALAYSIA..now i'am doing my project for university as final year student in bachelor of electric instrumen, control and automation.. | ||
| Very useful. I used this model to design my own in the past. The only thing that should be noted is for beginners. this is that the logic gates and flip flops can be of any variety of logic. you could use a 7486, XOR and a 7476 flip flop. Or a combination. again, very useful, and skips all the crap, going straight to the schematic. | ||

| dear sir/madam i want to make simple brushless dc motor esc which is use in r/c airplane or helicopter.but i can't find good brushless esc.i hope you will be help me. so would you sent me a simple three phase brushless esc circuit. your regard labgiri | ||
| Wow someone posts a schematic (not even his design) and every wants tech support, someone even wants the PCB layout. If you want more current use darlingtons like the 2N6282 , higher voltage just make sure the transistors are rated for it. Usually 30VDC is not a problem. And don't forget those clamp diodes... 1N5819 work well. | ||
| The stepper motor that I have takes 4 wires and a ground. Will this controller work with it. What I see this one has is 4 wires with a 12volt feed am I understanding the drawing right. | ||
| I've been looking for a schematic for a bi-polar stepper motor driver (stepper motors have 2 coils/4 wires as opposed to 4 coils/6 wires). The caption at the right of the coils suggest thata there are 2 coils but it looks like there may be 6 connections to the motor which has me a little confused. THanks! | ||
| I want know how to control the resonance of stepper motor when it is moving at low speed? I am getting noise when it is coupled to spur gear at low speed. | ||
| I just have 2 questions for you. I was wondering what voltage of stepper motors this circuit could handle. | It is a unipolar controller. If you need a bipolar controller, this circuit can be augmented with an H-bridge. A quick google seach should turn something up (almost identical to this circuit, iirc). | ||
| can you give ideas of wireless stepper motor control using pc to microcontroller rf interface | ||
| Hy Balázs! This is Unipolar. Look the 4 pins in PNPs, and the 5th pin the core 12V. 5 pin = Unipolar. Egyébként sok sikert! | ||
| Hello! It is a bipolar or an unipolar stepper motor controller? | ||
| Fiebig: I just analyzed the circuit. It does remember its position when reversed. :) | ||
| Just wondering how the reverse works with this circuit. Does it remember it's position when reversed? IE: if I'm pulsing the circuit and it moves from position 1 to 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, and ends on 3, then flip the reverse switch, will the next step take it to 2 or does it restart at 4 or 1? | ||
| no pcb layout (Editor's notes: Nope, there isn't.) |
