I am trying to get my email messages from Outlook Express in XP on my old computer, on to Live Mail in Win7 of my new computer.
I have identified the folder (with a name enclosed in curly brackets) and copied it to a USB stick. When I try to import the file into Live Mail it tells me there are no files in the folder or the files are being used by another program. I can identify that all the files are present and that their file names are correct – although I cannot read the contents.
Looking for guidance from Microsoft, they state that files may not be acceptable if the read-only attribute is set. I tried to clear that under file's 'properties' but that doesn't clear it. I have also used 'run' on the XP machine and the instruction attrib -r (drive:\path\filename). That won't clear the attribute either.
I am just about going up the wall with this problem. Can anyone suggest anything? |

There is an odd quirk in Microsoft's import wizard which has existed forever...When you point Windows Live mail to the Outlook mail folder, point it to the "Outlook Express" folder, not the "Mail" folder beneath. It will find the "Mail" folder and then import it. Stupid and weird, but there is a KB article around somewhere explaining why.
You imported folders will then end up in a subgroup "Imported Folders" and you can then manually move your mail where you want it. |

I managed to transfer about 6 messages from OE's inbox, but failed to transfer my 11 folders holding about 150 files between them.
I decided to waste no more time on it and changed to Mozilla Thunderbird instead. I had no problems transferring the folders to that. |

I use Thunderbird for all of my e-mail accounts. It just works.
I tried Outlook but for some reason it refused to connect to a Microsoft Exchange Server that I require. How ironic, seeing as they both come from Microsoft.

| Isn't it amazing that Live Mail has component parts that handle unrelated things like a calender, etc, yet fails to provide a core function like properly importing mail from one of Microsoft's other products. |

Odd, I don't think I've ever had an issue connecting Outlook to Exchange, across any version. What I have noticed is that Outlook 2010 and Exchange 2010 don't like self signed SSL certificates and will warn the client about a possible security problem unless the Exchange certificate is added to the client.
Windows Live Mail will import Outlook Express as long as the directory structure is respected and the folders aren't corrupt. Done it many times, though I do admit that the first time was a bit of a learning curve.
What really annoys me is that Microsoft removed the ability to export email account settings after Outlook 2003 and Outlook Express. Really?!
Yes, Windows 8 will be the next Vista. There is no question about this. Metro is a disaster for desktop use. The monochrome colour scheme is like running Windows 2. |
