This will be a cool project cause most people dont know a 555 can be used like this.
The datasheet for the 555 shows how it can do PWM. But its max current is 200mA so the output into an 8 ohm speaker is only 0.16W. A cheap clock radio is 0.5W.
Double the volume of what? Since your hearing's response to loudness is logarithmic then you need 10 times the power to sound twice as loud. Double the power is only a little bit louder.
