Hello everyone, my brother knows programming really well and needs an idea for a program he can make for our computer company. Any ideas? |
If you don't have the time to do it right, when will you have the time to do it over? |

What? What kind of a program do you have a need for?
Do you mean something like a "Duke Nukem" (computer program) from 3DRealms (company).
More info needed. |

An antispyware application that with one click, completely removes AntiVirus2009 and its variants. |

We usually charge $150 - $200 for that. |

I havn't gotten bothered by viruses in a long time. Probably because I have automated my computer to take care of itself and I am very wary of dangerous websites. Also I use Virtual PC to open possibly infected files.

Isn't $150 - $200 a bit steep for 0.5 to 1 hour of labor? |

To get rid of that virus, no. Of course, they can go to geek squad and do it for $500 and still not get it fixed. |

$200/hr isn't steep? To me, that's bordering on robbery. $200 is enough for me to do an image, wipe and reload, then a data restore.
Geek Squad/Nerds On Site/etc. are a false economy. It often takes twice the labor for me to correct the problems they create then to just fix the issue correctly in the first place. |

Exactly. We constantly have deals going on especially when that virus was really popular. People would rather call Geek squad than support local businesses. It usually takes 1-2 hours between the three of us. but if all you do is a system restore, that is expensive. |

You basically said all you do is backup the data, and do a system restore. |

No, I don't. I said that amount of money is enough for me to do an image, wipe and reload, then a data restore. Nowhere did I mention "system restore" or indicate that is how I solve the virus issue. What I am saying is that you are grossly overcharging for the amount of labour it takes, and it is enough money for me to completely reload the system, which is far more time consuming then getting rid of the virus. |

Why go through that trouble when you can do a backup through recovery and reformat the drive to original? Wait, they are the same thing! At first you said all you do to get rid of the virus is basically do a system restore. Now, you are saying, it is easier to get rid of a virus that bugs IE and Firefox to download itself over and over And changes the file name every time to bury it's tracks is easy to get rid of? Rogue viruses suck. It is possible to get rid of them, it takes time, but gotta deal with it, because that is my job. I am sure people aren't going to want to go across the country (and up a bit) to get their computer fixed at your shop. |

No, once again I said nothing about doing a system restore. Reread my posts again. I was simply comparing the amount of labour it would take me to do a complete reload to what you are charging for a fairly simple virus removal. My point was that you seem to be charging an extraordinary amount for labour, and I would be able to do 2 or three times the work for the same money.
At this point I have AV2009 removal down to a science and it takes about an hour. Maybe it takes longer for you, and thus justifies the extra cost. I don't know. |

"Data restore" is not the same thing as System Restore Yerboogieman. Data Restore is restoring the user's documents and files, etc. Taking an image with something like Symantec Ghost tends to be quicker and more straightforward than a backup. Whatsmore, if you screw the system up or lose their data and settings when rebuilding it and the customer gets upset with you, you can reload the image that you took and leave it in that state. In a situation where you haven't got WDS/RIS, Roaming profiles (for user's data) and Group Policy Software Installation or a good clean disk image with applications preinstalled, rebuilding a system can become unnecessary. |
