Data Restore is restoring the user's documents and files, etc. Taking an image with something like Symantec Ghost tends to be quicker and more straightforward than a backup. Whatsmore, if you screw the system up or lose their data and settings when rebuilding it and the customer gets upset with you, you can reload the image that you took and leave it in that state. In a situation where you haven't got WDS/RIS, Roaming profiles (for user's data) and Group Policy Software Installation or a good clean disk image with applications preinstalled, rebuilding a system can become unnecessary.

And, the difference between data restore and a backup is?

If you don't have the time to do it right, when will you have the time to do it over?

Data restore is restoring the backup. A backup is taking a copy for backup purposes.

Well, a data restore and a system restore.

If you don't have the time to do it right, when will you have the time to do it over?

Data restore see above. System restore is the system in windows me/xp/vista/7 which allows you to roll back the system state to a snapshot taken at a previous date.

I should use capitalization to refer to System Restore, that semi useless feature in WinMe, XP, Vista, 7 that restores the registry and key system files back to an automatic backup. I have only found this feature to be of use once, and consequently, I disable it on all my machines.

A data restore would be putting customers data back on the system from an image I previously took.

The trick to removing AV2009 is to pull the HD out of the infected computer, and remove the infection using another computer. Remove all the obvious crud manually, then run scans with:

-AVG
-MalwareBytes
-Ad-Aware

Clear all the temp directories (don't forget the various temp folders under the user folders), search for any newly created files and delete, check the hosts file, etc. You can even mount the registry on the uninfected machine and pull out the related keys.
