I have been trying to understand the deal with amps/ volts. If I have a power supply of 12v/ 1a and need to power an op amp that only requires 12v/ .5 amps, will it burn up the op amp? Thanks.

No, the circuit only draws the amount of current it needs.

An opamp draws only 0.1mA to 30mA, not 0.5A.
There are a couple of power opamps available that draw 0.5A when they are working hard. Then they need a heatsink.
