I have an air pump that is powered by a 250ma 12V AC transformer. The input on the back of the pump is 12V 50-60hz 2w.

I believe it works by using the alternating current to turn on and off an electromagnet.

I wish to power it from a DC source.

My idea is a square wave generator to a mosfet connected to a 250ma current limiter.

My problem is I need to find a way to limit current draw to 250ma.

The pump draws (2W/12V) 167mA from 12VAC. If you feed it a 50Hz or 60Hz sine-wave that is 12VAC RMS then it will draw only 167mA. A square-wave is different and might break the pump.

the pump is constructed by 2 levers of fulcrem, membrane of the pump, magnet. (double output pump)

there is a U shaped magnet (with the U ends outside the lever magnets) inside is another magnet surrounded by what appears to be a coil with the end of wire going to the plug pack.

oh and the DC source is a 5w soalr panel.

what kind of circuit to power it if a square wave is not a good idea?

There are about 5 common sine-wave generator circuits.
