you had a 24 volt starter motor, and two 12 volt batteries, but connected the batteries in parallel.. so the motor was only getting 12volts, and used a 12 volt speed controller, would the motor still over heat? the idea of having the two batteries was to then have an over drive button, which would connect the 2 batteries in series, and give the motor the full 24 volts, but you'd use it in moderation just to get upto speed, and whatever.... (spin ya wheels)

any thoughts or suggestions?

My only thought is that it has been covered many times in many threads that starter motors dont make good motors for EVs.

yes, due to the extreme heat they generate, and the fact that they are way too powerfull... so.. run it at half the voltage, and get alot less heat, and alot less power... or are there other reasons they aren't suitable?

If you can find one with real bearings (most only have bushings) and can cool it, then it should be fine for the most part...But these things are very inefficient, and will pull huge currents.
