We put up a few outside christmas lights at xmas, we are building up the amount we have year after year, but at the moment the display is fairly modest, just a few trees with lights in them.
Anyway a couple of days ago some carol signers (not sure if carol signing happens in us and canada, but it does in england, where I am) came to the door, they were 12 - 13 year old boys more interested in the money making part of it rather than the singing, they didn't even start singing until we opened the door (they knocked on the door). anyway they were told that we did not have any change in the house to give to them, the next night I notice that one tree is out, the bastards had grabbed the lights and ripped some of them off the tree, breaking a bulb and separating a connector in the process (also snapped a clip off it), I just can't beileve that anyone could sink to such a low

We live in the country, and we still have vandalism, and for no apparent reason. I don't think parents teach there kids morals anymore.
Where we live people carol for fun. Sometimes people give you food or something, but its mainly because you want you.

We still occasionally get carolers around here. It's sort of an old neighbourhood, so for whatever reason the tradition has "leaked" through.
Sorry to hear about your problems. It doesn't suprise me though, since a great number of people seem to think they have to extract some sort of "revenge" in this type of situation. I don't know where this idea comes from, but it reminds me of the kids who blame the teachers because they failed, or those who blame the police because they get a ticket. It's quite sad, but I have begun to expect this type of behaviour.
I was at the movies Friday night, and a whole group of kids was in the row behind. They wouldn't shut up, even after I asked them several times (with increasingly threatening tone/posture each iteration). Well I finally just had enough and got the manager to kick them out. As they left they said (with more cursing) "Thanks for getting us kicked out". Not quite true...they got themselves kicked out...I guess it all goes into the much larger problem of people not willing to accept responsibility for their own problems/actions. So quick to blame others, and the scary thing is they believe it.
I personally lost faith in the world when I was 15. We had just built and awesome tree fort in a forrest near a friend's house. This thing was great...Built accross 4 trees, two rooms, a good 15 feet by 15 feet, fireplace, real windows, TV, 12V electrical system, remote controlled retracting rope ladder, etc. We had constant problems during the build, dealing with vandelism and such. Even to the point where someone chopped down one of the trees and we had to replace it with a pole. About a month after it was completed, someone came and chopped it down again. Took an ax and broke all the walls, basically destroyed and spray painted the whole place. Strange thing is they stole nothing but the two 12V batteries and the switch panel...
People suck, the world is doomed.

It makes you wonder if TV is really spending more time influencing people, rather than folks passing on their knowledge and teaching young folks (like myself) the true things to life. Some TV statistics at this address: http://www.parentstv.org/ptc/facts/mediafacts.asp
Makes you wonder....

I am in the process of loosing hope. I am still clinging on the the facts that people like us exist in greater numbers than we think and when we have kids, we will pass on our knowlidge to them who will hopfully Continue to enligten their children and so on.
THERE IS HOPE IN THE FUTURE!

but isnt that your fault for leaving it there with out a lock, or did you lock it. You know what sucks, i had a friend over, he was using my computer, i left the room to get someting. I had a box of Energizer industrial batteries on the table in my room. I they were sent as a sample. Two days later i went over to his house to play some video games, i noticed the same box on his shelf. I dont know if he took it or something, but i have yet to find those batteries here. You cant find those in a store, so i am pretty sure he couldnt have bought then unless he ordered them on the net or something...oh well... makes you think

Well if he did steal them, your friend is pretty dumb. If you can verify that they're your batteries I'd ask him to explain himself and watch 'em squirm.

I would have just taken them and put them back on my own table. If your frend asks and says you stole them ask where he got them . then youll know if he stole thm when he says the store.

well, I lost faith in the world on my 11th birthday. A "birthday bash" at school left me with bruises, cuts and bruised kidneys. Strangely enough thats the same day I lost faith in the idea of equality in the sexes, about 10 boys were given 2 days suspension each, and the girl who kicked me square in the face when I was down had to write out the "hundred demons" ie 100 *hard* words in the back of our spelling books.
Still, I disagree with the article that Johnson directed us to. I believe that, though long term exposure to computer violence can be bad, most people can seperate computer games and real life. Swearing is too widespread to stop completely, I've been told I swear too much when I'm with friends for a few days (camping and that) but I never swore to my parents, grandparents and strangers. I have sworn in front of teachers though, but not at them and only as an adjective.
TV violence, such as horror movies and crime movies can influence people, but this is not the reason they commit crimes. Many of the "horror film fans" are unstable, or not quite right in the head to begin with.
As for those situations where you may suspect someone is going to be mindlessly destrucive, with the christmas lights or the tree house, keep a camera ready and get them in the act. I have done this a few times, when some guys at school tried to egg my house, when the same people tried to stteal my letterbox and when someone tried to steal my friends bike from our front lawn. Not only are cameras great for getting evidence, as soon as someone sees one they run. One of my friends is an amature astronomer, and was taking pictures of the night sky at a park. He used up 24 photos in a 24- roll of film when he walked back and found someone robbing his car. He took a photo, the theif turned around and he took another photo. The guy then ran up, knocked my friend down and stole the camera and proceded to remove the film and through it away. As the 24- film had 26 photos in it, as most do, the camera went on auto rewind and the film was quite safe. Turns out the police got the guy the next day, and used the film as evidence.

Equality of the sexes...there's an oxymoron if I've ever heard one....
As for cameras, I now have cameras in my backyard and facing my garage. Too many stupid people out there...

Ive grown up accepting this stuff. I know thta if i leave my bike outside unlocked its GOING to get stolen. Just a matter of time.If i leave anything of value out in my backyard its gonna disappear. All i can do is take as many counter measures as i can (ie 3/8 inch chain and case hardened padlocks because they do have bolt cutters) All the lights outside my house have motion detectors. Im not even gonna think about putting a dvd system in my car until I put in my 2 way transmitting alarm. Someone smashed the window for a maglight and before then they stole my sub (they?) All this and i only live in a town with 40000 people. I guess its kinda sad that i just accept it.

I was at a garbige place, here in Danmark they are ver good, I found my 200Mhz notebook at it, and last time I was there, Ifound a Pentium III motherboard with processor, I was standing near that big container with all that electronics stuff, and talking to one of my friends, when the man, who is looking after the garbige place come towards us and yelled OUT! He riped that Pentiunm III motherboard I had in my hands out, yelled OUT again threw it back in the container and threw a printer over it so it cracked. I just had this feeling of hate it isn't very often I get it... I just thought are peopke realy so boring? I wanted to yell back at him and say: Don't you understand, that we children do need this stuff, to learn something, to learn how things work, get clever, and then get a good education, a good job, and then become much more, than you you trashman? but damn! I didn't I will do it next time if he do it again. While there are also other men looking after the garbige place, and one of them even helps me to get things out of that container, he asks if he can hold anything, so I acn get to the thing that I need, he does understand.... People are...... You could shoot them all with potato guns!
