Tuesday night I replaced my LinkSys BEFSR411 router with a Netopia R910. The LinkSys is really limited in what it can do, and because the fact that it is a "consumer" router, it has problems with the high amounts of traffic I put through it. It would randomly drop port 80 (Web) for around half an hour or so, and randomly lock up for 20 minutes at a time several times a day. The LinkSys does not offer much in the way of security past basic NAT. It had to go. The Netopia is a "real" router, akin to a Cisco. It offers everything from NAT to a good firewall to integrated VPN, full remote admin, etc. It' s just a much beefier product.
Anyway, the new router forced an IP address change, which meant updating the DNS records. This can take several days to propegate across the Internet, hence the downtime. The site was actually up, but no-one could find it. Since it was "down" anyway, I took the opportunity to replace all the server fans (those 15,000 RPM SCSI drives are MAJOR heat sources) and upgrade the UPS to an 800W APC unit. Just need to install the PowerChute software.
Now, there is one small issue. I am not convinced that the new router is, well, routing. I have the suspician that it seems to drop out several times a day. During these periods, it will still respond to pings, but no traffic will go in or out. About half an hour later, it will recover and continue operation. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to log a fault or exception when this happens, so it is difficult to prove.
Because of this, I have a small favour to ask. If you are surfing the forum and it just dies, try pinging me at 24.43.47.218 . If the router responds, then try to telnet in. If successful, you should get a "name:" prompt in the TelNet window. If the router responds to pings, but won't allow TelNet, then it has gone off "into space". It should recover a little while later....If you do this test, please let me know....Thanks.
BTW, with the addition of this router, my server area is getting more and more "real". Currently running two servers, NetGear switches, Nordx patch panels, the big APC UPS (which needs bigger batteries), all in a custom server rack I made two years ago...Will update pictures on the "My Computers" page next time I update the site (hopefully by the end of Nov).

Ok, I know I will ping you. I learned how to do that while i had no internet connection. I tried to network my 2 computers together using a homemade crossover cable. And in order to check if i had did it seccesfully i had to ping the other computer.
try 1-75% lost try 2-0% loss try 3-25% loss

When I ping, the first one or two request timeout, but the rest are average 45ms. The telnet works . Yeah on thursday I was able to access the site from school but not from home (Sympatico), but my friend was able to, probably because he has Rogers.

Great so see you back up! (I couldn't reach you for sever days :( ) I can telnet in to your router, but it seems to be dropping some echo requests.

OK, guys, pinging the site won't tell anyone anything past "is it up?". Reread the post:

No big deal, I'm pretty convinced that it works now.
Some packet loss is normal, especially if you are on dial up. We're talking about a very big network here.

Aaron, I just wanted to thank you for this forum and the time you spent putting it together. Since I have been a member, I've learned much and received a bunch of help from the fellow EE folks. Thanks again!
