I have been in this last days observing this site, and i might say it is a very very good site, but at the "weapons" section i don't see mentioned one of the most powerfull guns that can be created at home, one friend i had at collegue made one that was used as an artillary in is farm, one day he shot a small slug into the air and when it fell (it took a while) it made a HUGE NOISE, i am of course talking about COILGUNS!!! Basically they are very powerfull weapons if you have powerfull power supplies :P, but this things use 1000uF capacitors. Well my friend is very crazy about eletromagnetics, and he asked me to help him build the sensors (i gave him the shematic and he builded), he made a gun with 5 acellaration stages, the last measure he made, scared me like s***, 1235Km/H, F***!!! :P Aaron you have to open a section FOR COILGUNS, and build one yourself! :P

CAN HELP :
Programming- C/C++, Assebmbly 8051,8086,VB, Pascal/delphy,etc..

Anything in Eletronics :D

I've never really had any interest in coil guns...

You wind-up many turns of #26 enamel wire on a rigid form.

GIMME SHEMATICS (schematics watever) NEED POWER, MORE POWER!! HEHEHEHEHEHEH. ahem, sorry where can i get schematics for a coilgun. the mechanical part is easy, but triggering the caps at the right moments is hard

Coilguns can be extremely simple to build if you only use one coil, the hard part is getting parts.

You need big caps, I salvaged 3 3300uf 50v caps from an ancient printer and wired them in parallel. I then took a 100ft roll or 18awg hookup wire from radioshack, hooked up a 40v transformer from mains with a bridge rectifier, and then hooked that to the caps. Then I connected it all with alligator clips (handy little things!) and a push button switch, and that's all it needed to work. BTW, you really should also install a diode across the coil to deal with inductive kickback, or you should at least unplug the transformer before firing, that way the only thing you can fry is the stuff hooked up to the coil.

That was just kind of a proof of concept, it could hardly throw a screw 10 feet when launched on a table about 4 feet above the ground.

I'm now working on a better one, with enameled wire. I stole some wire from an old transformer, I think it's 18 awg, which is a heck of a lot easier to coil then 26 awg, though you'll fit less coils of wire in the same space. I've got one coil so far, winding it on a rigid plastic tube about the size of a straw. The first coil is triggered by a push button switch. The next coils will be triggered by an IR led and phototransistor which detects when the projectile passes through a certain point. I'll experiment with different distances of this from the coils to find the ideal combination. The coil will be triggered with SCR's, which are ideal for this application since they will begin conducting when the projectile triggers the optical detection circuit, and will continue conducting until the energy in the cap is depleted.

I've always been more of a railgun fan:

but I have to admit that coilguns are a lot simpler to make.
