Posted - Apr 29 2009 : 12:42:38 PM A condenser mic needs a 48VDC voltage between the plates of its condenser. One plate is the moving diaphragm that forms part of a capacitive voltage divider. This mic needs a preamp with an extremely high input impedance.
A newer similar mic is the electret mic. It has the 48V built in (on its electret material) and it has a FET impedance converter built-in that needs 0.5mA at a few volts to power it.
Store people in 3rd world countries mistakenly call an electret mic a condenser mic. Some people call it an electret condenser mic.
