ok, i just wrote out a big long post, but i lost it when i tried to login and failed, arg...
so wont write it all out again.
brief summary, my car has been broken into three times in the last month
im sick of it.
obvious solution: alarm
the obvious solution is being adressed currently (ie shopping for an alarm)
the solution i WANT is to make would-be burglers think twice after touching my car. i am thinking along the lines of a high voltage electric shock...
i was wondering if it would be possible to rig up a capacitor or some device that will supply an electric charge to the door handles when the alarm is activated.
the result being that when mr.burgler comes along and trys to open the door, lightening shoots out his ass!
well, ok, not quite, but something that will put im on hiss ass anyway.
um, yeah. suggestions and comments would be greatly appreciated. thankyou for taking the time to read this topic :)

That's a really good post, puts things into perspective. But here in Canada, we are not as lawyer-happy as the US (where the whole problem is ridiculous). A judge would look at the roof-falling suit and laugh. Not that he/she would do the same with regards to a flame thrower anti-theft device though. Purposefully "boobie trapping" something is probably ilegal most everywhere.

Well, the issue I see everybody circumventing is exactly why does the car keep getting broken into? Let me explain myself here. Thieves do not break into people's cars without a reason. They either want to steal the car, steal something inside the car, damage the car, or a combo of all 3. I am guessing since you still have your car that it has not been stolen, or if it has you are one of the lucky few to get it recovered. If the thief wants to damage the car just to be stupid, they'll do it whether they can get inside or not. In fact, if you shock them you just give them more of a reason to go off on your car and cause more damage. A theif wanting to simply damage your car will do whatever it takes to make it worth their time. Flat tires, stolen wheels (yes, wheel locks can be broken off) bashed panels, broken glass, etc. etc. So I'd think twice about what you would be doing to that person by shocking or burning them. I have yet to see a theif who would simply walk away after being burned or shocked. Believe me, they WILL take it out of your car, make it worth their time and even worse they have grounds if they do walk away for a lawsuit.
But I would like to turn my attention to the most common reason of car break ins. It has to do with the owner of the car having something inside the car that the theif wants. If things are left to sit on seats and other places in plain view, you are basically advertising it to anyone who walks by the car that you have it. Also, people with big stereo systems who blare it around town are getting the attention of anyone needing a few hundred or thousand bucks worth of stereo equipment. The more unique the car is, the easier it is for the theif to spot it when they walk by it in a parking lot later. That is one of the reasons I leave the outside of my car stock. Unless you memorize my plate number, good luck picking it out. The most valuable lesson I have learned is to not keep things of value in the car, and if that is an absolute must put it in a place that is out of view. My hi-fi stereo equipment gets left at home. In my car, my stock tape deck with a CD car kit serves its purpose. My CD player gets locked in the car under the seat out of plain view, but if the theif wants to search for what he doesnt know is there and it gets stolen I'm out 25 bucks. Big deal.
I think the most feasible thing to do is to find out what it is that the theives want from your car, and then focus on eliminating it or hiding it. You talk about being able to accept panel damage, but I would think twice about that statement. I had two doors on my car damaged, one was a tiny mark along the side, and the other door had a huge dent which allowed the window to still operate and the door to open, but the door had to be reskinned. To repair both doors was 1500 bucks (luckily covered by the insurance of the other guy who backed into me). For what little damage was there, I can only imagine what a ticked off theif would do to a car that shocked them.I do not know what exactly you have that is a necessity in your car that is worth 1500 bucks but if it is that important to you to have that kind of stuff in your car then I would use that "acceptable loss in panel damage" towards insurance on the things in your car that you feel you have to have for whatever reason that may be.

as far as I know, if YOU can make it, the burglar can break it - the best car protection is a (more or less) trained german Shepherd/Doberman/... - the bigger and meaner it looks, the less training needed

Not very good with the Electronics, but, maybe you could rig up 8 small plates under the door handle ( + - + - + - + -) half positive and half negative. There fingure should complete the curcuit if spaced just right. Just a thought.

1)these guys seem like dickheads
2)ill be spreading the word to everyone i know telling them to steer clear of the company
3)tell the panel place it was their fault, make a complaint with insurance company in the hopes that negative feedback will stop or slow down number of customers comming from insurance company (ie, remove the panel place's client base since they get most customers from insurance comapny
or you could go straight to number four
4) not worry about it too much, get over it, go to number 2 and move on with your life, its only $45...

lol, gotta admit those stickdeath.com animations really brightened up my day :D
on a slightly more annoyed note, during this weekend i went to vizit my girlfriend (she lives 150km's from me)
Now i have to add that ive had my car back from the panelbeater's for two weeks now. it looks as good as new.
i drove it round for one week before realising i had no breaklights! after i payed $45 from my own pocket for an autoelectrician to fix the breaklights insurance told me that they wouldnt reimburse me because it wasnt due to the accident. This was caused by the panelbeaters as far as i can see (the lights worked when i took it to them and didnt when i got it back)
So, what was wrong? the wiring from the spoiler stop light runs through a small hole in the bootlid and joins onto the normal stoplights. however when the car was at the panelbeaters they must have knocked the spoiler hella hard or something, causing the wire's protective plastic coating to be sliced off. the wire was just earthing against the body. $45 aint bad to have that repaired ($45nz= $27us)
But anyways that was a week ago, back on track eh?
After all the bad luck above, this weekend when i was viziting my girlfriend i returned to my car to get a CD. Only to find that some clever person had hit my passenger side mirror!!!
now if you hit a mirror and bend it towards the front of your car, the mirror fitting or something snaps.
Very annoying, now i have to get a new mirror, or at least a new fitting (depends on dammage as ive only glanced at it.
One last note to this post is that J, my girlfriend is pregnant :)
It is not my baby as it was before i met her, however father unknowen so I get to play daddy by the looks of it :D:D:D
on a more pissed off note to this good news,
J went into the doctor complaining of an incredibly painful stomache ache 2 weeks ago. her doctor whom she has seen all of her life (the doctor has 5 children of her own) did not pick up on the fact that she was pregnant and diagnosed it as a stomache ulcer.
J went BACK to the doctor one week later because the pills she had been given wernt working. her regular doctor was away so a fill in saw her. He diagnosed her as having gaulstones, and to add insult to injury gave her hayfever tablets (antihistimeans)!!!!!!!!!
It was not until this weekend when I took J back to the doctor a third time and saw a THIRD doctor that she found out that she was pregnant and that the pain was being caused by a urinary infection NOT a stomache ulcer NOT gaulstones, but an INFECTION!!!
yesterday we saw her regular doctor to confirm everything and found J was five months pregnant. we even had the great pleasure of hearing the baby's heartbeat.
What is the point in telling you all this? If you ever come to New Zealand, never, ever, EVER, EVER!!! go to any doctors in Timaru! they are all unprofessional, pathetic, overpaid morons who wouldnt even know if THEY were sick, let alone others.
Anyhowz, had a long day/weekend and gunna have a long week by looks of things so will head off. have a good one guyz :)

I don't think I need to get to the practical reasons why this won't work, since it is just a farce...But I believe there is a need for security devices that threaten theives with bodily harm. After all, theieves are stupid, and the only thing that stupid people respond to negative reinforcement of the physical kind...

also thieves in nz are smart, theyd get the camera first, then the stuff from car, then sell it ALL, lol

put up cheap camera nearby and tape them.I promise they wont come back.I had everthing on my car before even steering locks,that did not deter them,but the camera did,dont forget to video tape,works just like you see on that tv show cops.

Another idea:
You might want to make it, so if someone starts poking around with a metal coathanger, they would touch a wire/piece of metal, and get shocked even before they get it unlocked. Of course, this would be hard to implement if the hv generator only turns on when the handle is pulled, but it still would be possible, and a very good deterrant.

Anyway, I wouldn't worry about the HV generator making someone's hand "stick". There isn't enough current, and the frequency is way higher then 60Hz (which is what causes the sticking effect....your nervous system gets screwed, and the muscles contract). Contact with 20KV or so high frequency causes a nasty shock, makes you jerk away, and can cause minor burns. But should be no serious damage done (assuming the victum doesn't have a pacemaker or the like).
The generator is "instant on".
