Hi all i am new to this forum and have a question, i recently read about a 10 amp supply on this forum which had a 10 amp transformer and a lm338
transistor regulator. My ques is this can i change the transformer to 3 amp and the transistor to a lm317t i have a few of these hence the wanting to use them. Any help would be of tremendous help. Oh did i menton i know very little about electronics.I need an out put of between 5-14v Thank you, Robbie .

Simply look at the datasheet for an LM317t to see that its maximum output current is only 1.5A and it might need a huge heatsink.

Most circuits on the internet about the LM317, LM338 and LM350 (like the project you found here) are WRONG because they use a 240 ohm programming resistor that can be used only on the more expensive LM117, LM138 and LM150 regulator ICs.
The LM317, LM338 and LM350 need a 120 ohm or less programming resistor to prevent the output voltage from rising when there is no load current.
