Simply look at the datasheet for an LM317t to see that its maximum output current is only 1.5A and it might need a huge heatsink.
Most circuits on the internet about the LM317, LM338 and LM350 (like the project you found here) are WRONG because they use a 240 ohm programming resistor that can be used only on the more expensive LM117, LM138 and LM150 regulator ICs. The LM317, LM338 and LM350 need a 120 ohm or less programming resistor to prevent the output voltage from rising when there is no load current. |
