The 555 isn't a particularly good clock source for many counters, because it has ringing in the level transitions that cause multiple counts evident as skipped numbers. A more reliable solution for a general-purpose clock would be a single CMOS inverting Schmitt trigger such as 1/6th of a CD40106BE. Place a timing resistor between the input and the output of the inverter, and a timing capacitor from the inverter input to ground. For a slow clock rate that will result in a visible counting rate, use a 1 megohm resistor and a 1 microfarad capacitor. If you use a polar capacitor, make the (-) lead ground. The clock output is the inverter output. Connect the 5 unused inverter inputs to ground. If you're adamant about using the 555, sometimes a small capacitor (100 to 1000pF) connected from its output to ground eliminates the miscounts, but this is not a recommended solution because it may not work with all 555s and all counters under all conditions. |

16 pin keypad to 7447 |
Sunday, February 26, 2012 2:45:19 PM |
Been looking for a simple schematic of connection between a 16 pin keypad and a 7447 chip. The purpose is to display on a 7 segment the number being pushed. Also, we plan on adding in microcontroller connection between the keypad and the 7447, to designate a code being entered. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

my desire to play with SevensegmenLED, welcome to digital. if use 12V try get IC 4518 decode counter and 4511 Seven segmen driver. Add Transistor to pull more current, it can drive 4-5 Leds for each segmenline that you can assign as "Big" Seven segmen. (assume one LED need 25mA so 25x4 serial LED=100mA enough for one Tr BC547 / 9014 ) |

This is in response to questions regarding counting up irradically, and by two's (ironically, they have similiar answers). The issue is what is known as electrical "bouncing". This means the hi to lo transition state of the timers output - tho on an active lo (to the counters input) - it "spikes" just high enough to be registered as another pulse (counting in multiples). How to fix? Well you may have guessed it - by "debouncing" - time to google. |

Help! Added 555 timer for this counter. |
Wednesday, September 23, 2009 1:34:16 AM |
I built this circuit using 555 timer Astable as my pulse. My problem is that it skips numbers. Like it will count from 1 to 4 then 7 and back to 1. Some times its random numbers. I thought I might have had some bad chips but I replaced them with new ones. For the 555 timer I am using R1 10k R2 100k and 10uF for a frequency of .068Hz. Doesn't any body have any suggestion why this might be skipping numbers? |

Hey All,
Looks like an old thread but hey! Knowledge is great to share.
To answer most of the questions here... Its simple, the IC that
you are using comes with a data spec sheet showing functions
and timing cycles. I am sure the answer is there.
For the multiple use of the display or cascaded displays, thats
easy too. When most counter reach max or preset cycle there
is an output. Use this as the next clock input for each display
in your chain of counters/display drivers. Should work out
nicely.
And a finally note, GREAT to see anyone and everyone
alive and kicking. PEACE YA ALL!!! |

To AbleMicky:
BCD stands for Binary Coded Decimal.
An example of a four bit BCD:
4 3 2 1 = Bit Number
_______
8 4 2 1 = Place Value
0 0 0 1 = 1
0 1 1 1 = 7
1 0 1 0 = 10
1 1 1 1 = 15

Wuld it be possible to see an example of how to add an additional DISP2 to this circuit, And how many DISPx would be the limit?
I think this could be used as a timer circuit with Count IN on U1 pin 14 being driven by a clock IC But I would like to see how the DISPx could be expanded.
Thanks |

This means i would need a 10-bit up counter. i'm using a 16-bit IC (74F269SPC) as the counter. i need some advice in constructing the circuit that will reset after counting up to 0011 0000 0000. thank you. |

If you are having trouble finding the 4790 and 4747 ICs you could also use the 4510 [TTL BCD UP/Down counter] and the 4511 [TTL display driver]. The circuit will then have to be modified slightly though. |

Hello I have built the 7 segment counter and I do need to add digits, because this is for a shuffle board repair. I can't find the parts anymore. I am trying to get the diplay to work with only one digit before I try to expand and am having trouble in that when I take the input to ground by touching the ground post on my bread board it comes up random and sometimes with a letter. Do I need to put a gate on the input suchas an and? I am using a battery so I don't have any noise.
Please help me with this?
Thanks!

hello sir,
i've got some Doubt.hope u'll find solution
problem is while making mod-10 counter from mod-16 counter we used to connect Qd and Qb output's to the input of NAND gate for resetting the counter back to zero.but using 74290, (decade counter) , converting it into mod-6 counter we have to use AND gate instead of NAND gate for resseting the counter back to zero. Why AND gate Why not NAND gate?plz help me. ive tried it in lab and verified also but why? |

Sorry but I'm a newbie rookie. I would like to build this and was checking on parts. They list several 7 segment LED's and all have a bus polarity of CA or CC. Which do I use or will either one work? |
