Fuel pump removed

Removal of the fuel pump was next. For cars that have been through more than one winter, this is always a hassle. The fuel pump is held on with 8 Phillips screws, that after a few years completely rust in place. The heads become too corroded to remove, and they must be drilled out. I soaked them in WD-40 for nearly a week, scraping and cleaning the screw heads. Luckily, 4 of them came out with a regular Phillips screwdriver and the aid of a hammer. Two were then removed with Craftsmen Damaged Screw Removers (highly recommended) and the remaining two were drilled out. The shanks of the screws that were drilled were removed with a pair of vice grips.

FD and FC fuel pumps

A comparison of the FD (3rd Gen RX-7, green) and FC (2nd Gen RX-7, gold) fuel pumps beside the stock fuel pump bracket. The FD pumps are a direct replacement for the FC pumps when you need more pressure and flow. It has been said that an FD pump can support 300HP in the FC.

FD pump in bracket

The FD pump was installed on the mounting bracket. The stock wiring connected right up, and the stock filter sock fit as it should.

Fuel pump reinstalled

The fuel pump was then reinstalled into the tank. At the time of construction, fuel pump gaskets were on a 6 week backorder from Mazda, so the old gasket was reused after being thoroughly checked and cleaned. Blue gasket goo was used to make sure the seal was perfect. There have been no leaks yet. Stainless steel screws were used to prevent the rust problem in the future. You will notice that this picture was taken before all the screws were put in place.
