Greatest Song Ever

I'm fairly convinced that the greatest song ever written is "Stripped" by Rammstein. Sure, the original was done by Depeche Mode (or however you spell it), but the Rammstein version is just so much better. The whole electronic background is a perfect compliment to the guitars, and it just begs to be cranked.

Also excellent first date music. Put it on, and if she is scared, then she's not worth keeping.

The greatest song ever written is by Tool, and it is called 10,000 Days. Not many will have heard it - those that have will understand. Comfortably Numb is a distant second, and possibly Search and Destroy comes in at third. Beyond that I couldn't call.

Everyone forgets how great my song, Baba O'Riley is. It has it all: a fantastic beginning, a fantastic chorus, and fabulous solos. Don't forget more than a feeling by boston, nirvana ripped off that riff.

I'm tired of people saying modern music sucks - ever considered that even during the 70s, some thought the then-modern music sucked, & argued that the 50s had been the best? But then AGAIN, even in the 50s, many hated the 'passing fad' of rock n roll, & saw Elvis as the equivalent of, say Britney today. Scary huh? The moral?: History never feels like history when you're living through it. Naturally I can't argue with something like the MELODY of your 'favourite song' cos it's subjective; but we can certainly argue over the quality of the LYRICS. On that basis, I feel the song with the deepest lyrics is 'The River' by Missy Higgins. Feel free to disagree, but it's to me the most hauntingly beautiful lyrics of all time. It's not well known, so here's part of the chorus: Somebody's bed / Will never be warm again / The river will keep this friend [Random lines from the 1st stanza]: So heavy a heart for someone merely ten years old And when she reached the river, her knees began to shiver Behind her was a vision, a painful apparition of a darker world that no-one should know [My favourite part:] She dived beneath the water's icy skin hoping the cold would kill the smell of angry gin ... And beautifully she sank as, up river was the bank where some bodiless troubles would stay... As you can probably tell, it's a song about a 10-year-old who was tragically driven to suicide. I'd be intrigued about what lyrics anyone could possibly suggest that would top those. Thanks Melissa ("Missy" for carving a space in the Hall of Greatness of music, ever since music was born.

G-Unit thats a really stupid thing to say... If "this ain't a scene" is the greatest song ever, then will it be mentioned in 5 years time on this blog??? I look at the oppinions posted a few years ago, and ppl mentioned songs that are now concidered "old" and "outa-date". Yet they thought they were the greatest at the time. your song is exactly the same. I say that fad ppl and teenagers who know NOTHING SHOULD NOT SUBMIT THEIR COMMENTS ON THIS BLOG. do not call anyone stupid because they have more musical knowledge than you, or because old music requires SOME taste to enjoy. Oh, and by the way, seeing as STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN was mentioned BY FAR more than any other song in good or bad light on this blog, that makes it the greatest... and how can u say led zeppelin "is a poof" if u don't even know that it's a Band of four members? or that their 4th album is the best-selling rock album ever??? Get your facts straight buddy. Don't mess with the classics

You guys are really bad and suck at choosing which one is the best and which one is the worst...In this case..We're arguing which song is the best song...I have many favorite songs as Hotel California,Vulnerable, A shoulder to cry on and White Flag....I think for those who likes pop or slow rock, they must like this song .....Lastly, I think there's nothing to argue about. As we know that music is the eye of beholder..

I do like rammstein but I didn't like it when they spoke in english in "stripped" because either the rhythm was too slow or the singing was too slow but it just dragged too much for me, although I liked some of the electronica in the song. I think that anything by Daft Punk is the greatest but there are alot of classics that swoop very close to them.

5.Nirvana- Smells Like Teen Spirit 4. Beatles- In My Life 3. Led Zepplin- Stairway to Heaven 2. Sam Cooke- A Change is Gonna Come/The Doors- Touch Me 1. Massive Attack- Unfinished Sympathy. No One outside of europe has ever heard this song but mtv2 in the UK rated it the greatest song of all time and I have to agree. I hate techno, but this one song hits me harder than any other. All of these songs transcend genre and can touch you in so many different ways.

Stairway to Heaven. 2 Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen 3. Hotel California by the Eagles 4. Imagine by John Lennon 5. tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton 6. Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple 7. Voodoo Chile by Jimi Hendrix 8. House of the Rising Sun by The Animals 9. Apache by The Shadows and finally... 10. Locamotive breath by Jethro Tull

Gotta be either Down with the Sickness or Ten Thousand Fists, both by Disturbed. Most people in public will recognize DwtS by sound, not by name. Listen to the beggining 30 seconds of it, and you'll probably recognize it, too. Led Zepplin's ok, but Kashmir is by far better then Stairway to Heaven.

McKenna thank you for finally putting up some country. How about Poncho and Lefty-Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard, and as one of my friends explained to me "Nine inch Nails merely wrote the song hurt, Johnny cash re-made it and performed it to perfection" And what about Simon and Garfunkel? "Cecilia" or "The Boxer" come on guus. and there is no way music now compares to what it used to be. Music had it's geniuses and then came Rap and Punk Rock.

Stairway to Heaven. If not 4 the way it sounds but the skill of those 4 blokes who did it. Name me 1 better vocalist than Rob Plant( dnt say freddy mercury) better guitarist than Jimmy Page ( dnt say Hendrix) as gd as John Paul Jones on Bass ( dnt say Steve Harris) or a faster, louder or crazier drummer thn John Bonham (dnt say Keith Moon). All those who dnt like it just dnt understand it or the band itself. Those guys created rock n roll (dnt say the beatles did)

lol this is kinda funny 2 years l8a u lot r still arguiing, but i think its quite certainly its not stairway to heaven, its the most overrated song i have ever heard, maybe if i had sniffed 10 ounces of coke it might be ok, but noway the best song ever! but i hav to say, probably smells like a teen spirit as an obv classic, bt ma fav since i heard it has been mr brightside by the killers! and Karma Police is also a very good song!

wouldn't - musically - the greatest 'song' be a classical pieces, by Motzart, or Bheethoven (sorry if i spelt it wrong) or another classical composer. I don't think any recent songwriter could compare to the musical ingenius those writers had

(Editor's notes: The only reason that the Classical composers are considered "the best" is because they were "the first". Not that their music is somehow bad of course, but that's most likely the reasons...Also no one is really composing much anymore. Artists are more concerned with writing that 4 minute long song to sell...)

OK, now that all the kids have picked a song that was released in the last 20 years completely forgetting the fact that music didn't start in 1985! It is well known FACT, that the best ROCK BALLAD/SONG ever done is IN FACT STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN. If anybody says otherwise they are under the age of 25 and haven't lived enough to know...or are just plain musically challenged! *foot note: trying to pick the best song is like asking what the best FOOD to eat is..it's preferance, but if you asked every person alive in England and North america today what the best song ever is, you would find that you get a beetles song, an elvis song, a patsy Cline song, etc....but overall, hands down, you'd get a majority saying Stairway to heaven..THIS IS CASE CLOSED!!!!! Nirvana????? GNR????? are you guys on frickin glue??? Best ever OMG you haven't lived!

The Greatest Song Ever - Is the One that takes you and yours to a place you'll always treasure. To feel a connection with the artists involved - hence I really dig the many, many hands that joined led zeppelin at the crossroads to perfection. - and as for those of you getting at little hot under the collar as regards your #1 song choice - Chill - a little knowledge is a dangerous thing " And I'll Know My song well - before I start Singing" - someone cool once said that.. Back to The Subject at hand. MY TOP 10: ( well for today anyhow .. actually it's just the playlist I'm listning to at the moment ) 1. Tomorrow Is A Long Time - Bob Dylan 2. Shine On You Crazy Diamond - Pink Floyd 3. Midnight Lightning - Jimi Hendrix 4. World Keeps On Turning - Peter Green (fleetwood Mac) 5. Spoonful - Cream 6. Blue Jean Blues - ZZ Top 7. Thorn in My Pride or Cursed Diamond - Black Crowes 8. Needle and the Damage done - Neil Young 9..Day in the Life - Beatles 10.Little Green - Joni Mitchell Agree or Disagree - Check them out first and hopefully enjoy.

Other great songs are: When the Sun Goes Down – ARTIC MONKEYS, London Calling – THE CLASH, Yellow – COLDPLAY, Lemon Tree – FOOLS GARDEN and Mad World – GARY JULES. There are so many great songs that there is no such thing as the greatest so I leave with the quote “without music, life is a journey through a desert.”

I dont think there is such a thing as "the greatest song ever" as everyone will have a different opinion as to what it is. I think that Stairway to Heaven is a brilliant song but I also think that Nirvana made some really good music as do Radiohead and the White Stripes. But all this music is different and its hard to compare. If I was pressed to answer I would go with either Stirway to Heaven or Heart Shaped Box although if I had a long think there are probably plenty of songs I like better than those.

Wow, some of you guys are gettin riled up. You cant a label a song "the greatest song ever", it is just not possible. Everybody likes different things. So, my FAVOURITE songs would have to be Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen, Daysleeper - REM, Bad Touch - Bloodhound Gang, Paint it Black - Rolling Stones and there are others that I cant think of at the moment. I'm only 15, so not ALL teenagers are into Slipknot and 50 cent (I HATE rap with a passion). Anyway this is just my opinion, and we all have a right to an opinion whether anyone else likes it or not.

(Editor's note: Bad Touch! It's 1999 all over again! Seriously, good choice. People malign Bloodhound Gang but they have some good stuff.)

The Greatest Band of the past 70 years is System Of A Down, because they don't stick to one kind of music, they play everything, and everything they play, they master. Anyone who labels this band "emo" or "loud noise" is missing out on a selection of incredible music. If you don't like one of their songs, then just listen to the next one on the track. Their greatest song is Aerials, from their album "Toxicity". This song must be one of the greatest ever written. no question. ThE MuSiCriTic

I would have to say Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. If not that then Stairway to Heaven, or Let It Be would take the #1 spot. Simply great songs. No one can occupy the spot, but a bit of all of them could. Hasn't happenned yet to my knowledge

I have been studying music all my life..... and can tell you all that anyone who hates stairway to heaven has no appreciaiton for music. You think that all of us stairway fans are basing our opinion of others'. You are wrong, your musical appreciation has just not yet matured to the level where Stairway can mean the most to you. Free Bird by Lynard Skynard, Stairway to Heaven by Led Zepplin, the 007 theme (don't diss it people, it rocks), Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls, Hush by Deep Purple, Take Five by Dave Brubeck (classic one there people. Jazz), Du Hast by Rammstein, Superstition by Stevie Wonder, Homeworld (the ladder) by Yes, and many others. These are what i consider my Fave's, but i am making no arguement as to the "Greatest Song Ever" these are just a bunch of great songs. Also, people, will you stop dissing the new bands? I mean, yes, they are not as good as older bands, but still, they get their point across, and some new bands have some very good songs, so will you PLEASE stop calling them crap? Thank you. The Whites Stripes covers of One More Cup Of Coffee (Bob Dylan) and Jolene (Dolly Parton) Two great writers and one voice with such feeling. I feel I should mention "The Hardest Button To Button" just for the lyric "I had a brain that felt like pancake batter". I love that line. And the fact that I want to play it so loud my ears bleed.

(Editor's note: I hate the White Stripes so much that I actually called a local radio station and offered to buy everyone there a case of beer if they stopped playing The White Stripes. Sadly it did not work...)

A little long-winded by Saul, nevertheless he may be right. However, as certain parts of our brains are more suceptible to particular noises, we have all had these various reactors in our brains conditioned by the environment we live in. The mind remembers sounds and smells and associates them with events and places. This is the sensation you feel when you hear a certain song and either love or hate it. As we are thought to only use up to 15% of our grey matter it can be assumed that some of these reactors lie dormant waiting for the right sound to come along. Is there an all ruling reactor that all humans will reacte in a positive way to? Would this mean that whatever tune or song would become an anthem for all mankind? So I guess what I am really saying is....... The Greatest song may well be out there........ it just hasn't been written yet.

you guys are all retarded, no offense to anyone that actually is retarded. Music is an incredibly deep mode of expression that is interpretted differently by each and every person, and even differently depening on oyur mood. There is no such thing as the greatest song. The word greatest signifies a single thing that is great. One song. There are great songs. There are even amazing songs. Songs that have been handed down from the gods to mortals to pluck out on their mere guitars. But there is no song that is unamously thought of as the greatest. So what is the point of asking if you know that no matter the answer, you will be wrong in somebody elses opinion. A more appropriate question to ask is "What is your favorite song." A favorite is personal. It is linked to one person. No can tell you that your favorite song is not your favorite. They can say your favorite song is not their favorite, they can even say that your favorite song sucks balls, but that doesn't mean anything. So in conclusion, all you little whiney kids need to shut up about what the greatest song ever is, because in reality, there isnt one.

(Editor's note: Well that's a little more hostile then I would expect from someone considering that the discussion up until now has been perfectly civil. Of course, with an email address that ends in @AOL.COM, what else is to be expected?)

Led Zeppelin fans are right (STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN, WHEN THE LEVEE BREAKS, MOBY DICK, WHOA LOTTA LOVE, ETC are all good songs). You PEOPLE have to know that BLACK LABEL SOCIETY is the GREATEST BAND since METALLICA, also a kick ass band, who also have badass songs (THE SMALL HOURS, FADE TO BLACK, BATTERY, ONE, ETC). BLACK LABEL SOCIETY HAS CREATED NOTHING BUT MASTERPIECES. I RECOMMEND (THE ROSEPETALLED GARDEN, HEY YOU, RUST, COUNTERFEIT GOD, ALL OF THE 1919 ETERNAL CD, ALL OF THE BLESSED HELLRIDE CD, HANGOVER MUSIC CD, ALL OF THE MAFIA CD, AND ALL OF THE KINGS OF DAMNATION CD). BLACK LABEL SOCIETY IS THE EPIPHANY OF HEAVY METAL. Rammstein is cool but unfortunately, all Richard Bernstein and Paul Landers do is play the same chords. All the songs don't change much. Till Lindemann does a kick ass job at writing lyrics.

i believe that there is no such thing as the " greatest song ever". Simply because the mind forms a mental block when one tries to decide upon this difficult matter.Mainly because when you listen to certain songs you like them because your'e in that mood.People who like stairway to heaven are probably needing some security in their life. They might feel insecure and STH certainly uplifts your mood. All people are different and all moods different. That is why there is no such thing as the best song in the world. Thats a JOKE...... best song in the world is the first song that ever hits your ears when youre a child. The first ever song you listen to is the only time that we listened to a sad/happy song without thinking back to your life and reflecting using the song to help you.

Oasis were by far and away the best band of the 90's, and deserve a lot of credit. Liam is up there with Axl Rose, Jonny Rotten and Dylan in terms of voices that are instantly recognisable, and Noel's song-writing is out of this world. Slide Away, Champagne Supernova and Live Forever are classics of the modern day.

Anybody who says Stairway to Heaven is the greatest song ever is too much of a tool to have their opinion counted. It is not even in the top 5 Led Zeppelin songs. Over the Hills and Far Away, Dy'er Mak'er, Kashmir, Fool in the Rain, and Going to California are all way better. Second, all you fraggles who claim Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit is anything special are too disillusioned to see the truth. Kurt Cobain was NOT a genius who transformed music. He was above average at best and if he had lived longer, instead of blowing his brains out like a coward, then he would have faded away and the rest of us normal people not living in our mom's basements wouldn't have to constantly hear about about the "revolutionary artist with a vision who died young, never yet showing his full potential." Give me a fucking break.

(Editor's note: Damn straight. I'm just going to go out and say it: Nirvana sucks.)

What is this site about.Stairway etc etc are all great tracks and its all stuff i loved and still like now.I know this is a subjective an emotive subject but i dont know how anything of the last 15 yrs could get a look in.Tho i stand to be corrected. However, one thing i wont accept is the lack of Bob Dylan stuff mentioned. He may not be to everyones liking, but if you give him a chance you willl listen to him and feel anyone else is alsmost musically anaemic in comparison.Im not botherd about competition on who is the best...im saying you must lsiten to him....all his stuff. Not just blowing in the ...times they are a ...and knocking on....He is unique...not many can say that after all this time.

Reason's why LED ZEPPELIN's STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN IS THE GREATEST SONG EVER The earliest, most serious attention paid to the song appeared in college newspapers and obscure music rags. It was never released as a single. yet: It remains the biggest-selling sheet music in the history of rock. An average hit sells 10,000 to 15,000 copies. Stairway to Heaven has sold more than one million copies. There are roughly six hundred AOR and "classic" rock stations in the U.S., which means that "Stairway" has been broadcast a minimum of 2,874 times. At eight minutes per spin, roughly 23 million minutes -- almost forty-four solid years -- have been devoted to the song. And the stats go on... If you like or dislike the song it's entirely up to you but the greatest ever song in my opinion has to meet certain criteria and have a unique history, not just, "no its not because it makes me fall asleep and its shit!" I mean Garth Brookes is one of the biggest selling artists and my opinion is that he is shite, but who knows in 30 years one of his songs may be the greatest ever! God help us And whoever posted Angels by Robbie Williams needs their head checking!

There is NO BEST SONG EVER!! people just have personal favorites! Personally I love the gorilaz - fell good inc. There is no doubt whatsoever that i dislike any of the songs said to be 'the best song ever' (appart from stairway to heaven) its just some people like them more than others. Also a lot of peoples opinions are influenced by the media and whats supposed to be cool rather than what they think is good!

First off stairway to heaven is a fucking awsome song, not the best ever though, not even led zeppelins best song. But jimmy page is the greatest guitarist that has ever lived, and will be. Nirvana is overrated they wouldnt be as famous if curt didnt kill himself. The greatest song though cant be determined but i do know that it was before the 80's started.

Now i'm a huge Sex Pistols fan, love the Ramones, the Clash, and Sabbath. But the Greatest song ever is hands down Don Mclean's American Pie. I'm sure alot of people in here have no idea what that songs really about. The Song tells the history of the sixties and the various movements, and overall loss of innocence using cryptic refferences to rock n roll legends. Don mclean perfectly captured the cultural revolution and its implications in some of the best song writing anyone has ever done. It is nihilistic, but at the same time light sounding and beautiful. Its a rare combination, made even rarer because of the depth of every single line.

My god!! you all seem like a pathetic bunch of old ladies. Even my grandma says Stairway is the best song ever, but where do you leave the Clash???!!! SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO has to be the greatest song written. It not only has a great and sticky rhythm, but there are also parts of it in spanish (my mother language) that makes it funny and very original. I could also mention like 50 of Elvis' songs, but it would just bore you. Go inform yourselves and listen to Ramones, Sex Pistols or any other good punk group before you start posting this comments.

I have really no opinion on the greatest song, but I can say that its not Stariway to Heaven. Most of you dont even listen to Zeppelin that much. Its a good band, HIGHLY overated. Also no Bohemian Rhapsody...good song, HIGHLY overated. It also cant be Iorn Man...it took Tony no time to write that work of crap. I wish you people would find a simple easy to listen song with a good solo. And not listen to only what is popular. My personal favorite is "Some day, One Day" Written by Brian May, on the Queen Album "Queen II". but shut the hell up about "Stairway to Heaven" you stupid wannabees.

Stairway to Heaven. Trust me iv watched jimmy page play it. Page is a great guitarest and he is a musical genuis wether you like him or you hate him. Stairway to Heaven is what made rock what it is. The solo is so fuckin amazing. But still I love the song Hey Joe by Hendrix but id have to say my favorite is either Sweet Dreams by Marilyn Manson or Achillies Last Stand by LED ZEPPELIN! And if you havent heard it you should listen to it its a really good song. But yeah stairway to heaven is the greatest song ever made and when i first heard it i thought it was gay but then when page plays that solo its like God is playing the guitar. So all of you dumb ass shit heads that say its gay you all are just DUMB ASS SHIT HEADS! So if you dont believe me you can email me and ill show you that im right cause Led Zeppelin made rock what it is and today rock can go to hell! In the past 50 or so years in America... The best songs of Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, Beatles, Pink Floyd are probably the best IMO. Also but to a little lesser extent, Billy Joel, Rolling Stones, the Who, Guns n Roses, Sublime, R.E.M Queen, Doors etc etc... Then you got... White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane (and Sombody to love) Hotel California - Eagles Freebird - Lynrard Skynard Layla - Clapton White Room - Cream Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen So many other its hard to remeber... but more recently the greatest of the current genertation... Nirvana , Green Day, Sublime, R.E.M. U2 , Oasis, Foo Fighters NOFX, NiN, Smashing Pumpkins and Bright Eyes Albums like The Wall,. Dark side of the Moon, Whats the Story Morning Glory, Karma Police, Deja Entendu, and ovbiously albums by the Beatles etc... are just all around good albums and must be appreciated as a whole... Good Music is subjective though, but I think we can all agree that all pop music is terrible, any songs played on MTV and pop radio now and stuff like that is just pure crap sold to bunch of stupid teenagers (like me) who buy it ...

Ok, I agree with the dude who said there is no greatest. Although I am much less angry than said dude. It all depends upon the criteria. Some of my favourites are Whisky In The Jar by Thin Lizzy (and the Metallica version, not that fond of the Dubliners though), Master Of Puppets and Battery by Metallica, Blind by KoRn, Counterfeit by Limp Bizkit, Spit It Out by Slipknot, as many people have said Stairway To Heaven, Paranoid by Sabbath, and I could go on for ages. I can't decide for myself between these, let alone anything anyone else has said here. Like I said, it depends upon the criteria, and the criteria depends upon the listener. P.S. Thanks all, I'm just doing an essay on this. The questions is something along the lines of: "Is there such thing as a classic and what are the criteria?", although it's more drawn out. This site has helped a bit in showing me that there are no real classics, only personal favourites.

Trying to find a consesus on what is the "greatest song" is a futile execise. You may as well ask what is the "loveliest food or who is the most " attractive person."Or what is the most "beautifulest sight" in the world.Anything that arouses the senses, whether its sound, taste, sight or whatever will inevitably & quite rightly have a subjective effect on us.I cried the othe day listening to an obscure artist 99% of you have never heard of.Is that the greatest song?

ok all this arguing is ffunny cause there can't be a greatest song ever how can you even define great.. there couldd be most popular but you can't proclaim a best song becausee everyone has different tastes in music somee would say mozart some would say britney alot have said stairway but this is popular opinion not greatness. Unlike a sportss event you can't meassure musicc in records or best songs

(Editor's note: What arguing?)

I'm typing this from beyond the grave ...and no it's not imagine, thats not the greatest song ever.. that would be the greatest song I wrote on my own, maybe the best lyrics I've ever written. But, the greatest song ever, would have to be 1970'S Across the Universe, which I wrote with Paul. Though, he didn't enjoy the way it was produced for Let It Be, I can see now that it without question The Beatles most important and best song. Therefore, making it the greatest song ever.

some of you are picking your favorite song (as opposed to the greatest song). In my opinion, Yesterday (Beatles) or Purple Haze (Jimi Hendrix) is the best song ever. Any band thats started after the years 1997 sucks (very few exceptions) Pop sucks Velvet Revolver is a joke (im a GNR fan to the max.) MTV is controlled by facist followers of Hitler (replay the music backwards and you'll know what im talking about) jk about the hitler part but MTV still sucks

you all are incompitent fools. you are picking your favorite song instead of the ones that are true genious. regardless of me being a massive GNR fan, i would say Coma is one of my favorite songs (november rain sucks... true GNR fans know that). crazy train is also really good. VELVET REVOLVER IS HORRIBLE!!!

(Editor's note: Well, I we are supposed to be picking songs based on musical genious, should not we be concentrating on Mozart, Beethovan, Tchaikovsky, etc.?)

What a stupid discussion. There is no greatest song ever written, it's all opinion. For me, "Clocks" by Coldplay really does it, but some people might disagree. For what it is, it rocks, it's fantastically written and a brilliant song. But plenty of other music is just as good.

"Must be a 13 year old antisocial MTV lover dying for social acceptance..We're all about classic rock, not about some emo garbage nobody listens to. You can make a case for Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd or Imagine by John Lennon..." Actually, no, I am 16 years old, I never watch MTV, I hate pop and I am doing a university degree in musicology. I have composed for orchestra and recorded two CDs of alternative rock. Jacques Loussier's Goldberg Variations was recorded in the same studio as most of Pink Floyd's The Wall. By the way, "Clocks" by Coldplay is as good as it gets. For someone who has studied music from the fourteenth century through the present day, that's what I like chilling out to in the evening. Now stop being so judgemental and bugger off.

SIMPLE MAN by Lynyrd Skynyrd Everyone LISTEN to the damn lyrics! Then you will see what I mean. The tie IMO is between that song and Bob Seager's - Like A Rock. I have no clue what your ages are but if you want a song that will take you back (I am 22 and when the lyrics 20 years now are sung I just think of 4 years) any numbers of years in your life, Like A Rock is that song. WHAT
Why
Sunday, September 26, 2004
Why do you people bother to decide that the best song in the world has even been written. The only music that is truely living is the music being written today (and I mean written by the proformer not some major label's bitch lyricist). Having said this I'd like to say that the best thing to do, rather than argue over some pathetic thing such as what the greatest song is?, would be to go out into the living world and find what is happening in good music (hint don't turn on MTV, they tell you what the popular music will be). Any way everybody knows that Tell me`what you you want by the Spice Girls is the greatest....... (it's called sarcasm deal with it)

(Editor's note: The only one I see arguing here is you. Calm down, count to 10 and go to your happy place. The world is not out to destroy you, and that attitude will certainly not help you in life).

Honestly I don't always like to agree with the most popular choice, but stairway to heaven, in my opinion, is probably the greatest song ever. There are so many great song out there though (all zeppelin songs are amazing.) The only thing that pissed me off are people who put down punk and new pop punk on their lists for greatest songs. Its rediculous. The music isn't original, it all sounds the exact same, basically all power chords (those can be great but are often over used), and it's just boring. Also "Babe I'm gonna leave you" by zeppelin is one of the bests songs I've ever heard.

To Super-Duper all those wondering why some people like to listen to old music, here's why: modern music SUCKS. There is NOTHING for me in modern music, save for a few artists (none of which are mainstream). Now, you listed New Found Glory, Sum41, and Blink182 as a wave of new bands. Put those bands against old bands like Zeppelin, Santana, Cream, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Pink Floyd, Ten Years After, and they don't even BEGIN to compare. 60s and 70s music was by far the best rock music ever created, and that's a fact. The greatest song ever written would have to be either "Layla" by Derek and the Dominos (Eric Clapton) or "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" by Pink Floyd.

I couldn't possibly pick a favorite but Stairway to Heaven is a classic. I'd much rather listen to Simple Man by Lynard Skynard. Don McLean's tribute to Vincent Van Gogh entitled Vincent is beautiful when it comes to lyrics. For a good laugh, I'd recommend an Irish drinking song called Under the Scotman's Kilt. I have no idea who sings it but that is a damn good song. As for all of your suggestions, I didn't take the time to read them. Why argue over opinions, right? I will shoot down one argument however and make it known that all punk rock sucks. This Good Charlotte and Simple Plan bullshit...no thanks.

Personally, I think stairway to heaven is the greatest song ever made. It is not because anyone told me that it was the greatest song in the world cause I didn't know anything about it the first time I heard it. I am very qualyfied in this area of knowledge though I listen to all kind of music and play a lot of instruments. I love music and i love stairway to heaven. It's so fuckin perfect. It starts of with just the guitar and a flute and later on the bass and the drums gets in as well. Then it fades over to the fuckin fantastic solo and becomes a rock song. And then jimmys voice raises an o and it ends so perfect. Of course it's my personall opinion, but I think that all you guys that say it sucks are fuckin idiots without musical experience. The Greatest Song Ever would be Tear Away, as interpreted by Drowning Pool. To agree with this opinion, you must have experienced a great deal of anguish. Stairway to Heaven is indeed a great song, but there is no message there. The music is incredible, but the meaning is lacking. Try Tear Away, and you can feel the pain of rejection, suffering, and heartbreak. Another contender is I Hate Everything About You, by Three Days Grace.

Hello! the greatest song ever is not stairway to heavan that song is too old it gets boring after a while. I think the greatest songs ever are: "Ocean Avenue" by Yellowcard "All Downhill From Here" by new found glory and "Fat Lip" by Sum 41 and if you want a song that isn't know by many people: "Capital H" by motion city soundtrack

First of all, "Jimmy Page", you should realize that all the Zepplin guys f'ing hate Stairway. I think it is the greatest ever, even if the lyrics make no sense. Under those, I see: Live and Let Die Dazed and Confused The End Du Reich Su Gut Asche zu Asche Paint it Black Iron Man All equal.
