The Canadian International Auto Show may become my go-to auto show due to the difficulties attending the NAIAS going forward. There is far more content at the Canadian show than the US show and it is far more convenient staying in country.
That said, the Canadian International Auto Show is also suffering from lack of technical content. There were few chassis and drivetrain displays, hardly any details on EV/hybrid/alternative fuel innovations. Technical info seemed to concentrate around connectivity which follows the shift in the market over the last few years. There just isn't much to distinguish one gray/white/black crossover from another. Drivetrains and manufacturing have been refined to the point where for the most part within tiers, vehicles are equivalent. So integration features with smart phones (how long before that app is unsupported?) and ecosystems like Google and Apple are being promoted. Perhaps because of the subscription fees they generate and the data they provide from the owner? Hmm...
I must say that if I was in the market for a new car, with the Hyundai N Vision 74 not yet available, I would be all over the Dodge Charger EV. A small (by today's standards) 2 door coupe, great lines and powerful EV drivetrain. Of course I'd go for the (rather fetish named, which I will never understand) "SCAT Pack" (gross) option and enjoy 670HP/627 ft-lbs and an effortless mid 11 quarter mile. If only one could get rid of that ridiculous "Fratzonic" false "exhaust" system but I'm sure the noise maker can be turned off.
Someone messed up at the Alfa Romeo display and seems to be very confused as to what a carburetor is. Surprising that through the entire show, no one caught it.
The "Gaslight" RX-7 was a neat surprise. RX-7s are getting more rare by the day and it is unusual for one to show up at any show, let alone a manufacturers show. Disappointment hit when I did some searching and found out that "Gaslight" was a "media brand" and looking underneath the car, showed it was all stock save for the 4" wheel spacers.
The grey VW is probably the first VW Beetle I've seen on air suspension and the installer did a hell of a job mounting the air tanks, solenoids and compressors.
OK, this is completely designers taking the piss, right? The Cadillac SOLLEI concept is imagined to come with a set of custom crystal bird calls. I just don't see the crossover here between who would buy this, and those that are going to drive off road to a field where they can call birds with easily breakable calls.
The Tesla display was interesting. Moved from prime territory at the center of the upper floor to a somewhat dark corner on the lower floor which little room to show much more than an unlabeled "robotaxi". Hm, wonder why?
