Let's start with the elephant in the room: the 2024 Canadian International Auto Show is the first time I have laid my eyes upon a Tesla Cybertruck, and it is bad. Forget the fact it looks like something a 5 year old would draw if asked "Draw me a picture of sci-fi truck" because beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Clearly there are people who think it looks great and that is their problem. However the Cybertruck is objectively bad. Many of the body lines don't actually line up. The doors don't sit squarely between the A and B pillars. The stainless shows ripples and obvious subtle dents throughout the whole body. One can tell by these patterns how the panels are fastened to the supporting structure. Panels have insanely sharp edges instead of being properly rolled. Rubber seals bulge out of their grooves. The mono-wiper unbalances the whole front perspective looking as if it was added as an afterthought. It is very, abundantly clear that Tesla's manufacturing does not have the talent to work with stainless steel. And this is the case even though the Cybertruck is made of 301 stainless, the lowest grade and the easiest to work alloy of 300 stainless.
Thankfully there were plenty of higher quality EVs at the show worth seeing. arc motors' '67 Ford Bronco conversion was a well thought example of a classical retrofit. Some of the welds were of questionable quality and I am not a fan of the butthole charging plug but aside from that, cool truck. Seems like Ford perhaps should have called the Mustang Mach E a "Bronco Lightening"? Instead of naming it after the obvious long line of Mustang SUVs...
The Scalar Performance SCR1 is a 335kW touring car based on the Toyota GR86. I'm not usually interested in full race cars but make that an EV and I take a closer look.
I've seen the Corvette E-Ray at a few other shows however I believe this is the first time I was able to view the actual production version as it is out for the 2024 model year. 655HP (combined) and a quarter mile of 10.5 seconds. Wow. But only a 3-4 mile range in pure EV mode? Well, I guess that's not necessarily the point of the vehicle.
The show's Auto Exotica featured a Lamborghini I've never seen before and probably won't again. Every show has Murciélagos, Countaches and Huracáns. When's the last time you laid your eyes upon a 1962 Lamborghini 2R tractor?! That classic Lambo was perfectly restored and I'd rather plow my backyard with it than have a Gallardo sit in my driveway.
