I arrived at the 2024 Bothwell Car Show with a broken camera, it having fallen off the tripod a week prior resulting in an impact with the shop floor. The damage caused problems with focus, exposure settings and made the camera sometimes spontaneously switch to macro mode. Consequently, these are not my best photos.

Regardless of camera issues, I enjoyed the show. As soon as I entered, I was faced with something I don't think I've ever seen. Or at least, when these things would have been common on the road, would have not noticed. The existence of a Pontiac Sunbird wagon is news to me and it's somewhat remarkable one would have survived considering the disposability of that entire "J body" platform.

Bent Rod Customs ridiculous diesel flatbed was directly across and caught my attention. Extreme, well put together yet looks very derivable. Another over the top diesel was somewhat less derivable, but powered by the venerable 92 series 2 stroke Detroit Diesel was nearby. I'm generally not a big fan of "rat rods" and don't even know if that is the correct description for the behemoth. It was ridiculous. That is a good thing. Well built, creative and one of the highlights of the show for me.

It is unusual and welcome to see an Anglia that has not been turned into a drag car or "gasser" but is instead conservatively built into what is probably a much more enjoyable vehicle.

On the other end of the spectrum, there was the purple Mini with matching trailer. From 10 feet away it looked great. Upon closer inspection, it was revealed to be an egregious example of how not to build something. If I happen to see this contraption trundling down the road in front of me, I will pull over and give it a wide berth. How this vehicle was ever able to pass safety inspection is a mystery probably answered by bribes or nepotism.

I'm becoming more and more of a fan of the Opel GT. What is not to like? Classic wedge, lightweight, small and still fairly inexpensive when found. They are starting to show up more and more in shows and with a bit of modernization (let's fix the electrics and install a more contemporary engine) are probably an excellent daily driver.

On a personal note, I'd like to extend a greeting to the individual who put out a cigarette on my windshield, letting the butt fall onto the cowl trim of my 2000 Insight. Did you want to impress your buddies as you walked from the show and saw "one of those fag hybrids"? Were you just too drunk consuming the straight grain alcohol or mouthwash you snuck into the show to exercise proper judgement? Hoping this would make your girlfriend (cousin) hot for you that night? See, the thing is that I was there to enjoy and appreciate the same show you were. Who knows, we may have even interacted during the show on a common interest while we looked at the same vehicle. And yet the vehicle I arrived in (which by the way, if past experience is a clue, would have been a center of attention if entered into the show) so offended you in some way that you felt you had to make a statement. You definitely did.
