Would like some help as a newbie in designing a power supply to provide 5V DC at up to 3 amps. I've seen a circuit diagram using a voltage regulator (LM338T) on this site. I'd really like to see or have more construction details as this will be a first project. Any help that can be provided would be highly appreciated.
The circuit you found makes an output up to 30V. When it is turned down to only 5V then the regulator has 29V across it which makes it get extremely hot and shut down unless the maximum output current is very low.
Make changes as follows: 1) Use a transformer voltage that is 7VAC or 8VAC at 4A. 2) Use a pot resistance that is 500 ohms. 3) Use a resistor resistor value that is 120 ohms.
