There are many circuits available on the 7805 linear regulator IC, several on this website. They are good to about 1.5A when properly heatsinked and very easy to use. However perhaps the easiest thing to do is to simply use a 5V switching power adapter, commonly supplied with routers, DSL modems, and other computer accessories. Very easy to find for free.
