Hi, I'm Chris. I'm a little new to electronics, and still don't quite understand the implications of making a few changes.

In your circuit diagram for the Fixed Voltage Power Supply (http://www.aaroncake.net/circuits/supply6.asp), I'm want to try and get as an efficient conversion of power as possible.

I only need 5v as this is used for a USB application.

I'm looking at replacing the LM7805 with a R-785.0-1.0 (I dont need more than 1amp).

I'm hoping to avoid a heatsink this way.

I need some help in determining how this will effect the capacitors...

Also, are there any other suggestions for increasing the efficiency?

Many thank for the site.

This circuit isn't efficient, it's an old linear power supply.

The datasheet of the DC/DC regulator you mentioned shows you how to use it in a circuit.

If this is only a one time use circuit (as in, not production), why not just get a switching power adapter that outputs 5V? Very, very common (cell phones, routers, switches, hubs, etc. etc.). I have a huge box of them just sitting around.
