Be very careful about running a public FTP server that anyone can upload to. I guarantee that very soon it will be filled with pr0n and warez. Additionally, if someone can upload something, they may be a little mean and upload a file which can infect your system by being just previewed.
Back in the day used to have an anonymous FTP account set up that allowed uploads but not downloads. It was hilarious the stuff that collected and it must have infuriated the people trying to download it. 
Consumer level routers suck, it's just that simple. I've been cleaning out the shop and literally sent a stack of dead consumer routers to e-waste. They last a year or two and then become unstable.
If you want a nice router, then the Netopia R910 is a great way to go if you can find one. Failing that, the Cisco RV042 (which even supports dual WAN). |

This is a very interesting thread. I must admit that I am also a newbie and due to this I think the thread is very interesting. I already compared different web hosts (e.g.: http://www.ixwebhosting.com/ ) but I am not quite sure which one I should choose. Any recommendations regarding a web hosting company.

| I was lucky, my Netgear is lasting for now. Some days it will work great and be fast. Other times, it will be drag-ass slow or not work at all. I have a new router. But I've been lazy the last few days (in reality it's been about 3 weeks ;-) ). |
If you don't have the time to do it right, when will you have the time to do it over? |

All the Netgear hardware that I have has died within 2 to 3 years since purchased. I am using a Linksys modem and two routers - a D-Link and a SPIRIT cheapy. The D-Link appears to be sensitive to humidity as it crashes when the humidity rises.

Am I the only one who has noticed that the guy in the "kissing couple" seems to have his hand in a rather interesting location on that girl? It may be just a trick of the angle but I've looked closely and it sure does appear like I think it does. So who in the hell would be doing that at that particular time?! Meh, come to think of it I've done far worse in odder situations so whatever...still not news though!

As you can see from my website, it's just the standard Apache web page. I don't have the time to do anything fancy at this time.
