Which circuit did you make? Please attach its schematic and parts list.

It sounds like this is a school project? As with any circuit, to understand it, you need to break it down into smaller circuits. Most inverters have an oscillator section, a driver section, and then a power section. In the schematics these normally progress from left to right. The oscillator is usually one or more ICs, then the driver section generally conditions and inverts the waveform, then the power section consists of MOSFETS or transistors that drive the transformer. Break the circuit down into each section and look up each in turn using the Google. Pull datasheets for any ICs and transistors/MOSFETs used so you can understand the signals they need to be fed.
