I have an old Sharp Vision XG-3850E projector and by the looks of it, it could about 15 years old. The projected light is pretty dim on the wall and I'm just wondering if it is the lamp that has reduced in brightness or maybe the LCD is shot (the picture's good though). I took the lamp out of the projector and powered it with leads running to the projector terminals and it seemed to me that the lamp is still very bright. I don't know, this is my first projector and I have nothing to compare it too.

Any ideas on what could be the prob?

All the projectors I have seen had suffered from a very dim image before the bulb ultimately dies, so yeah, I'd think it is time for the bulb to be replaced. They're about $100-$200. Don't touch the new one while putting it in.

Won't bother getting a new bulb. I found this projector by the side of a road and I was lucky enough to find one that even worked at all.
