This is crazy, I have a computer here that my dad picked up off the street that has a HDD full of tax info, baby pictures, naked baby pictures, vacation pictures, music and God knows what else (even though I don't believe in him/her). There's Resumes and letters typed up as well, videos too! There must be hundreds of pictures here. I know there address, their names and where they've been. Far out! The only problem the computer had was a dead power supply. Friggin mind blowing. Why would someone do this? Anyway I'm gonna scrub the HDD and use it for something useful.

Oh no I was hoping is wasn't going to find anything like this. WHY!!! Yuk! I don't want to see that! I'm gonna microwave this HDD.

P.S.
Don't get the wrong idea. There doesn't seem to be anything illegal on this HDD. They seem to be a couple with a baby, that's all.

I picked a computer up off the street once too. There was nothing wrong with it whatsoever and when I booted it there was some personal info on it too. Nothing to that degree, but I was still weirded out by it. I wiped the drive clean several times and then used the drive and the RAM.

It is some creepy stuff. That's why if I ever throw out a computer, it's getting nuked first.

Nuked? LOL!

I never throw out computers. I've got computers probably about as old as me (20 years). I'll never get rid of the mid 90's to 99ish computers that I've got. Those computers played the games of my childhood. Ha! 32MB system memory, 2MB video memory, 2GB HDD, CD-ROM, 166MHz Pentium, and windows 98. Hehe. The old programs just don't run as well on virtualization, so it's good to keep the hardware those programs were designed for.

Come over here kiddies look what I used to play when I was a boy! Duke Nukem!!! Come get some!

You mean Their. I wish people would just call a local computer store or something.

If you don't have the time to do it right, when will you have the time to do it over?

You had the same setup as my Aunt, we had the 486, 64mb, and 500MB hard drive. A while later the CD-ROM went dead. Good times. Now I can play Duke Nukem on my PSP or even Doom on a cell phone.

Time to chew some bubble gum and kick some ass. And I'm all out of gum.

I pick computers out of the garbage all the time. It's amazing how people will throw out a year old machine just because of a little virus infection. Then again, faced with the cost that most repair stores would quote to wipe and reload it, I can sort of see. The average person spends less then $500 on a new machine so a $200 cost to fix the old one might not be considered economical.

It's amazing the stuff that people will leave on their machines. Just grab one of those garbage machines, boot it up and then head to Facebook or Hotmail. Inevitably it will log right into the site.

Gross pictures are pretty standard. I've had customers bring in machines for data transfers to new machines. At that point, it is inevitable that I will see at least something in their "My Pictures" folder. I'm not really snooping, but I do need to at least check that things will move over properly or have moved.

All because they don't know how to fix it themself... FOR FREE!!!
It's a waste of money, especially if the computer is really one year old.

On average all the computers that I/we've actually bought last about 3 to 4 years before we get a new one. The $2.5K computer I've custom made for myself should be fine for about 5 years, with upgrades like an SSD. The HDD is killing me, but overall the computer is still very fast.

Few people are spending any real money on machines, or even bothering to upgrade them. Most people walk into the store and buy not quite the cheapest machine, but close. They really are throw away computers considering the quality of the stuff inside so even I have a hard time recommending to someone that a few hours of labor should be put into a Windows reload.

People don't really know how to fix any of their own stuff though. The local Honda dealer charges $60 for an oil change and ever weekend they are booked solid. It take what, 30 minutes and $20 worth of stuff to change you own oil?

Yeah

Oh well it's money out of their pocket, straight into ours. Can't complain really. I always try to fix broken stuff within reason, but sometimes it makes more sense to throw away something instead of repairing it. Like an old T.V., cheap MP3 player or phone.

Mom says "Your dad never threw things away, same with you... Trying to turn this place to an archive house.."
You know, cleaning up my dad's mini-office after he died I found a bunch of useful stuff, about 1979* and a box full of old coins & invoices... :-p
Anyways, I never threw my devices away, if something goes wrong, I either fix it or destroy it properly -NUKE - eh?
I still have my first laptop's HDD here in a case.. :-)
