I have an old laptop running NT4 Terminal Server Edition with SP6 installed. It's running Abyss Web Server X2 to run a website. Everything seems to run very smoothly and efficiently. However, I want to use a wired PCMCIA ethernet card, instead of the Cisco Aironet 340 PCMCIA wireless card that's in there at the moment. I therefore went eBay and purchased a Xircom card, as I've had no hassle with Xircom PCMCIA network products on NT4. However, the card I bought, a Xircom CreditCard Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56 doesn't seem to work properly on NT4. I installed the latest NIC drivers (I don't care about the modem), and restarted the system. The driver seems to load (as described in Event Viewer), but the LEDs on the dongle keep turning on and off, like the card is being initialised constantly. DHCP can't get an IP address, except for once it worked fine, until I rebooted. All this was done with the default IRQ, Base I/O and Memory Addresses. I tried messing with the IRQ, I/O and Memory Addresses in the hope it would fix something, but it just causes NT to lock up when the driver loads.
I've uninstalled and re-installed NT networking loads of times, just incase it was a protocol binding problem that was stopping the network connection. After putting back in the Cisco card, and installing the drivers, the laptop is back on the network, so I don't think it's a problem with binding.
This card must work on NT4, as it was released when NT4 was still at large, so they wouldn't get away with writing some non-operational driver. I've tested the card on XP and it works fine straight away. |
