Can someone please point me to a decent electronics distributor in the KW - London - SW Ontario area.

I am looking for basic components such as timer chips, resistors, capacitors, etc...

I am new to electronics but am trying to learn the basics and would like a place to shop that will meet (most) all my needs.

I have a diagram and some course material but unfortunately no place that I can find to buy the parts.

Thanks

Just logged in again and...
¨You last visited on Oct 14 2009 6:40:10 PM¨
Didn´t know it´s been that long..
I´m glat to be back though..
I´ve just moved to Winnipeg, Canada trying to settle down, get a job and apartment...
Finding a job seems to be a never ending adventure no matter how low i thought I could go (regarding the positions I´m applying for)...
So, I´m doing a little research on starting my own small business, computer repairs/maintenance/etc.
I´m having some difficulty, which was expected, but I´m just surprised i can´t find anywhere to buy components or repair kits... I´ve been searching online for days...
Does anyone have any Idea where I could look?

Are you intending to make a business out of it? If so, then Ingram Micro is Canada's largest distributor of computer parts.

I hope so, depending on how things go...
I will buy a set of repair/networking tools for my own use. Better if I find a single pack containing most of the tools I might need later, then computer parts to build my own PC, I only travelled with my netbook & swiss army knife (for ¨tools¨), left a whole bunch of important things back in Nigeria thinking I´d find them again, easily...
I hope to build my own website (which i´m still learning how to), then try to create an online presence ¨PC technician¨ that way I could earn something (if/when) I get a repair job to do through the site..
Finding a job here seems quite difficult, not that it´s easy anywhere & worse still, I have no certifications yet. (still have a lot to learn).

I´ll look at Ingram Micro, hope to find something interesting there...
Thanks..

Finding tools should not be a difficult thing. Any Radio Shack/The Source will have a toolkit, as well as any good electronics store.

Finding parts here is not like it is in Nigeria. Here, as I'm sure you have seen, there is a computer store on every street corner selling stuff for no money. Now the problem with that is that there are so many computer repair places, you may not get much business unless you can do something extraordinary (ie. concentrate on rural customers and drive to them).

Ingram Micro carries damn near everything, but they do require you to set up an account which will come at a fairly hefty expense to you as a start up.

Thanks a bunch Chief,
For some reason, I had to put a pause on running around town for a while, will resume that duty by Tuesday then I´d know what I can really afford. For now, I´ve started working on my first real website, still learning though so I practically did this one with a book in one hand and a netbook in the other...
Knowing a little of HTML & CSS helped a lot, though I didn´t have to do all the work since there are lots of good quality open source web templates I could use, the journey´s already made shorter that way.
It´s surprising the quality of good materials you could get for free...
Anyways, my first time registering a domain & making a real website...
I didn´t do all the work but I´m very excited about it, how it turned out. I spent the whole day indoors & only came outside for a little cool breese by 6:45pm. Somehow, google-chrome doesn´t display my ads (from asdsense). It´s getting a bit tempting to add ´web design´ to the list of services I provide.
I know though that I´m still far from being a pro at that...
Monday, I´m going out to check for info about registering a business in Winnipeg.
Hope I´m not moving too fast!?
Just a bit worried I might get stuck if I don´t work out something for myself soon enough...
www.subtech.ca
Not much of a name, eh?
That´s my site though, & don´t laugh. Please.....

It's been a while... Again..
I just get too muddled up in things I don't even know how many months go by..
My only sense of timing seems to be my payslip, "Oh! it's another two weeks gone already!"..
My website still untouched, I remember I still have a load of 'home based PC repair' paperwork I bought, still haven't finished working on it and I've done a 60buck repair job already...
My job seems to be crippling my business even before it starts growing, working even on Sundays, like, sitting there, typing away on the PC from am to pm, solving other people's problems..
It's a nice thing to do, got better at it in a few days, then it turns to a daily chore, nothing interesting, but it's still nice to do..
Funny thing, my cell phone was still on right inside the office, well you can't point fingers "innocent until proven ...", so I reported this, 2 weeks later, no one even bothered to announce a missing phone in any form, yet I get 24 emails or more every hour, just updates and notices..
Anyhow it goes, I'm glad though. I'm not the expert but I do plan well.
First time in Canada, & I get myself to Winnipeg, no 'friends' & family no guarantor or references in Canada...
(<==except for the ones that offer a piece of solution/advice on "www.aaroncake.net"==>)
One month later, I'm in my own apt., have a job (& a business?) & it seems I'm making new friends already.
I'm told I'm really lucky, it's not an easy thing to come by, & I totally agree with that..
Just one thing, everyone keeps saying...
"haven't experienced Winnipeg winter?... You're in for a treat"..

Winnipeg is called "Winterpeg" for a reason. Glad you are enjoying Canada.
