I am trying to substitute IRF450 to switch the ground
- side of an ignition coil. The gate will get its OFF command
from the old contact point.Is there some more precausion to this
like installing a damper diode ?Are mosfets preferrable than power transistor.No problem blowing some mosfets i got a bunch of them
from discarded switching power supply.

You'll definitely need some snubbing/damping at the coil. This page should give you some ideas on driving an ignition coil from logic circuits:
