I have recently detached a HV anode suction cap from a computer CRT screen and had a little fun with it. I did this experiment.
http://www.aaroncake.net/circuits/hvgen.htm

Aaron says you need 40KV; well my flyback gives out about that much by looking at the spark length in still air. When I did this experiment the tube didn't light up! Whats wrong? I also tried another experiment and put a few flakes of aluminiumm foil on top of the pizza tray and watched them float away with a little help from my screw driver.

I have been shocked only once by this experiment:
The spark leaped to my finger from the pizza tray and went out through my arse and feet to ground through the concrete under the carpet. My mum got shocked before me and the exact same thing happend. I knew it wouldn't hurt us or else I wouldn't have done the experiment. But anyway we had a very VERY good laugh. My sister noticed some smoke comming from my mum's bum when she kicked the pizza tray away in fright. However i didn't see any smoke but we still lauged.

Kidies be very carfull with this experiment. I used a drill battery operateing a 230VAC inverter to provide limited current to the monitor.

Oh and yes I am nuts, I am an experimenter. But never put youself in danger unnecessarily. Always be planned if something goes wrong.

It's rectified voltage source. You need alternating current to make that work.

Oh yes that makes sense. Didn't Aaron use a voltage multiplier? That would have rectified it for him. I think I need more voltage; hmmmm, wait until I build a 3 metre tall tesla coil and sit on top of it. LOL

I didn't use the multiplier for the light bulb thing. The light depends on the high frequency to excite the gas.
