By now I'm sure everyone has noticed the new Google Ads on this forum and on a few of the other pages on this site. You're probably asking yourself "What the hell?", so I'll explain a little.
This is not my way to obtain easy money or anything of the sort. The ads are there so that I may improve the site. It has become abundantly clear to me that the site is in need of a major hardware and software update, to the tune of several thousand dollars worth. Well with my current RX-7 project, my next RX-7 project already waiting, saving for a house and all of life's other little expenses (including the new laptop I just purchased due to the death of my old Compaq) I just really can't justify pumping that kind of money into the site right now.
About a week ago I spent a few hours thoroughly reading the information available on the Google advertising program. I had been hearing of the success that webmasters were obtaining, so I started to pay attention to these little ads as I surfed around.
Some may remember in the past that I did display some ad banners for the Commonwealth Network, but while I did get a cheque for $50 every few months they were just too intrusive and annoying. Thus they were ultimately removed.
What impressed me about the Google ads is how slick and targeted they were. Compared to everything else, they were totally easy to ignore if you were not interested in their content. But even more interesting was how useful they really were. When I started paying attention, I began clicking on ads and actually finding products and information directly related to what I was doing at the time. I've never been one for paying any kind of attention to advertising so this struck me as quite surprising.
I put some thought into it and decided to give Google advertising a try on some of the more heavily visited parts of the site. I'm hoping that they will not only be useful for the visitors of this site, but ultimately provide a revenue stream that allows me to improve the experience for everyone.

Im suprised you havent put them up sooner.
There are quite a few people who come to the site looking for kits and stuff....my guess is that it will work pretty good.
How does it work, to you get a little money everytime someone clicks on an ad?

I earn a little bit per impression, and then a little more per click. I just checked my Google stats this morning and have actually been surprised.

Does the click have to end in a sale for you to get credit? If not, then everyone who frequents this site should just take a few seconds to click on an ad or two each time they visit the site, then just close the new window.

No sale is needed, just the traffic. Don't bother just clicking and closing the window...It's working well enough without anyone putting in any effort  . If you're interested, click. If not, then don't.
I must admit that I personally have two interesting companies by just glancing at the ads. One makes RF transmitter/receiver modules that can be integrated into almost any other product, and the other makes flexible printed circuit boards. Cool stuff...

You don't need to do this. In fact, the Google advertising agreement specifically forbids "encouraging" visitors to click the ads. To just click on them randomly cheats everyone especially the vendor paying Google for the ad space.

thats a good point - it's not like google is actually handing out money - they are charging those who are advertising - and it can get pretty expensive - especially if its just random click thrus.
the google advertising is great for smaller businesses trying to get exposure - so try to keep that in mind if you plan on just clicking ads for the heck of it.
