The B&S engines have a common flange on the bottom, so likely that engine will fit many mowers.
Now, as for the recoil starter. They are not difficult to repair for those that know what they are doing. For the newbie, they are a dangerous repair since the spring is razor sharp and tightly coiled. If it is allowed to unravel (very easy if you've never done one before) serious injury will certainly result. I don't suggest that you try this as your first repair.
If you insist, go to the library and pick up a book on small engine repair. It will include instructions for repairing the starter, as well as the safety procedures.
