Yeah, it's probably something fairly specific. The point of a catalyst is that it reduces the energy necessary for a chemical reaction to occur. In the converter of a car, it makes it easier for the crap in the exhaust to react and change to a less harmful form. In a fuel cell it helps along the "2H + O = H2O + Electricity" reaction.
