Unfortunately, those are all normally induction motors, so you will not run them from a battery pack without building a decently powered inverter with variable frequency output (for speed control).
What you want are brushed DC motors. 2 or 3 HP is HUGE, enough power to drive a small car at freeway speeds. You'll want somethign considerably less power hungry, and certainly lighter. eBay is a good source for scooter motors, and you probably have a surplus store nearby.
If you are willing to use a higher voltage battery pack (120V), circular saw motors are popular, and often used on go-karts.

The answer is "sort of"...It kind of falls into the "why?" catagory. Yes, it could be done. Installation of "real" bearings (not bushings), new brushes, eliminating the solenoid system and powering the brushes directly. But what you're left with is a horribly inefficient motor, with no cooling capability and windings designed for intermittant operation (ie. big wire, wound tight). You could rewind and design cooling, but by that time, you should have just bought the proper motor.

I saw someone had built a motorized lawn chair. it had a toyota starter motor and it looked pretty darn powerfull.

Starter motors are very powerfull...But run one under load for 45 seconds and then touch it.
