Anybody else think that a small video camera or two might be used to make a good rear view mirror for a car? How would you organize this?

It woud be cool, I dont know about better tho. You coud just put a camera in the back, and have a CRT in the front with its difraction coil wires reversed.

Sure, but there is one small problem. Mirrors don't fail. Cameras and monitors, as electronic devices, have rather large failure rates in comparison. Also, mirrors will operate without power...

That said, there are several kits available to replace your mirrors. However, as I understand it, it is not DOT legal to replace all your mirrors with cameras.

As far as I understand, these kits are designed not to replace mirrors, but to aid them for backing up and parking. Rear-view cameras are factory options, if not standard, on some upscale vehicles.

I wrestled with this for a long time and tried doing it myself, the problem is rear-view cams need to have reversal of image otherwise everything you see on your monitor/display up front is horizontally reversed...think about it, so what happens is what you see on the displays right is on your left and v.v. So beware, don't buy the wrong camera. Your best bet , and I can't recommend it enough is buying a cam from this guy, (best reverse cam I've had yet and waterproof with excellent illumination (good lux) at night when brake lights are on. I've been thru three trials of different reverse cams, and this one is hands down the creme.:

Yea, thats why I said to reverse the horizontal diflection coil wires on the CRT so the picture is mirror image.

Wow, Cirvin. Where were you when I needed you to teach me how to do image reversal. All these people told me it couldn't be done, that it'd require mirrors and larger cam, and that it wasn't an electonic issue, when I knew it was because my Sony cam does it in my truck. Too late now, but interesting.
