No torque.

But it handles great, and certainly gets up and goes when you bang the gears right.

Damn. Torque is fun. Is it feasible to do something about the lack of torque problem?

Turbo.

However, it seems that there is not very much space in the engine bay. I looked at one at the dealer with the engine cover and stuff removed, and I can't imagine where you would stuff a decent sized turbo. The engine is very close to the inner fender.

Someone on the RX-7 forum has installed a T4 sized turbo, but had to make a manifold to move it to the front of the engine. No idea how it has worked out...

True, but that would greatly limit the top speed...

Really, it's not that big of a deal. It's just the first thing you notice when you drive it. If you've driven a rotary vehicle before, then you know that to get any power out of the engine, it must be spinning > 6000 RPM. The RX-8, you really need to wind out to 9500 RPM or so, but when you do, hold onto your balls... I mean, it can't compare to my turbo 13B high compression 6 port, because that engine is a torque monster (as much as a rotary can be) from 2500 RPM up..If you really want rotary torque, you HAVE to go to the 20B three rotor.

20B? That sounds expensive and exotic. Is it?

How badly woud you kill me if i put it in a Honda?

The 20B was used in the Japan only Eunos Cosmo. This is Mazda's high end luxery sedan. Getting one over here means going to an importer. Expect to pay around $3000, so not too bad considering. When I am finished with the 2 rotor I am currently building for my RX-7, I will be going 20B.

I think putting one in a Honda would be quite cool...It would make a great sleeper, except for the distinct "barking" exhaust tone.

A good muffler coud fix that. Coudn't you modify the hood to allow extran headroom for the turbo?

You probably wouldn't need to modify the hood (in a Honda). The turbos sit low on the engine, on the passenger (driver in Japan ) side.

Adding a muffler is just...wrong...The 20B MUST be heard!

I meant mod the hood in an RX8.

I coud see a conversation with me and some local ricers, and it ends with me saying "what took ya?"

There is a good amount of room between the top of the engine on the RX-8 and the hood. Easily enough for a decent sized supercharger.

Ooooh, so it is down near the exauhst that is tight.

Don't turbochargers work better that superchargers?

People will argue this to the death, but all things being equal, superchargers are just as good as turbochargers and vice versa.

The Renesis rotary seems a better candidate for supercharging based on the placement of the exhaust ports.

Do you think it's a good idea to mix 2 stroke oil in your gas? Also would Restore help my lack of compression in an 04 RX8. I recently inherited my Mothers RX8 which she drove all year round in Canada, short trip rarely over 3k RPM and had many flooded starting issues in the Winter, with all the dealer mods. Still the car must cool down for about 15 minutes before starting. I am planning on driving the car 1500 miles to Florida in the next couple weeks. Any suggestions?
