Go to the scrap yard or on the street corner on the garbage day. Take old refrigerator and remove the old compressor. most of the time they are in good shape.

It's not fast but with an old propane thank, you can improve the reserve of it.
Don't forget to add a pressure limits, beacause it could be dangerous.

Remember that the compressor in a fridge is meant to pump freon or another coolant. Because of this, it also pumps oil. This oil is circulated around with the cooling agent to lubricate this system. Without this oil, the compressor will quickly burn out. Unfortunately, there is no easy to run the compressor without circulating oil through it. The oils are also ester based, and quite nasty. I certainly wouldn't want it anywhere near my skin. There is also the hazard of the freon often found in older systems. Horrible stuff, bad for the environment and anyone around.

If you want a SAFE cheap compressor, just grap an air pump from an auto parts store. The kind that run on 12V to inflate tires. Totally portable, and most can do >250PSI.

OK for the environment and the oil. It's true that the freon is not good for the environment. but if the fridge is already broken, it's not supose to have freon inside. depending on what is broken. for the oil, if you change the configuration of the reservoir, it should prenvent leak.

But for people that don't want to work for they material acquisition and want to pay, 12V compressor are a better idea.
