i have a dead battery. it is lead acid and i have had it hooked up to my charger for hours. evry time i hook it up to a small 12v lamp, it runs for about 5 seconds and then the voltage tapers off. it is obvius the acid has probably solidified in the plates. if i where to cahrge it with a couple hundred amps, say from some high voltage capacitors or a welder, would it live again?

On the EV discussion list, the subject of battery rejuvination comes up fairly often. Yes, if you charge it with high current and do a few discharges, you can get some very limited life from the battery. But it will be very limited, and probably not worth your trouble. If the battery has sulfated badly, it is basically garbage and should be sent to the recycling center.

Most of the magical battery chargers and fixers that claim to repair batteries don't work. There are some minor exceptions, but these involve batteries that are simply "out of shape" from sitting.
