I am just using Adobe Premiere 5.1 RT with the AVI file for output. I am using the Indio video 5.06 compressor. I have done one update to the Media Player since I downloaded it. The MPEG format is the same as what was in the player since I downloaded it. I will be interested to see if it plays garbled on your computer. If it does it makes for one heck of a problem to figure out!
ANSWER: I got to looking at another guys "Spuddead 1" video and my video properties and he is using Indio compression like me...Well I thought I was using Indio because that is what I have it set for. It turns out that the ATI Rage Pro is using ATI VCR2 codec for compression...Aaaahhhh...We see the problem. So I went and searched for VCR2 codec and found the answers. The solution is to simply check the recompress box in Premiere so the video will change into Indio like it is set for. If you do not recompress it will leave the video in VCR2 format. People without ATI cards cannot view the video. Here is the url at ATI:
Funny I was having problems with #1 there and also #2 in Premiere. It kept getting the error in VCR2.DLL file...All the answers in one place...SO that means I have to redo the videos and upload them again! Yeah it will take forever to upload them but what the heck. They may be a bit smaller in size with the Indio compression. What the heck was ATI thinking when they made these cards? SELFISH SUCKERS...
P.S. They do have a VCR2 codec for download but it is not supported and that means "good luck if it screws up your system" so I will just check the box!
The ATI codec is actually pretty good. However, as you found out only those with ATI capture cards can view it. The codec is great for recording things at low bandwidth and size, but ATI never really did release it to the public.
Have you considered compressing those videos with Real Video? Using a high bandwidth, you can get a good quality video, but shrink the download size from 2MB to 200K.
I guess I could try the real video method. It is easily WAREZ download so no problem there. I had a little more trouble with the video beside just checking the button. I keep getting errors when I try to make the exported movie which is what makes the file recompressed. SO I actually found a good use for that ATI Video Editor that does not edit the MPEG that ATI Television makes. It edits very easily and then it says "CHOOSE COMPRESSION" I thought I was going to wet my pants... It luckily has the Indio compression 4.4 so I was able to convert and send them to my brother. They work no problem. Got to fix the mtdew file since it has some purple crap in one frame. Sometimes the conversion messes it up a little but you just redo it and it is fine. The nice thing is I am using 100% quality and not losing any of the original video converting. I will fix the mtdew file and then send it to my brother. We set the files up on his server in Germany so you can now download them ( anyone outside the US cannot access my downloads since it is us.geocities.share ) Go ahead and download them if you get time - it is also resume supported which geocities is not. I will download the real video stuff and see how it does. Right now the files are 1.49, 1.52 & 1.82 Mb which is not bad. It would be nice to get them down to 200k though. Well I am off to fix the file and download Real Video...
