My jaw dropped. I live a an hour or so from Everett. That's not even a good idea for temporary.

Seems fairly typical for around here. Garage door openers are one of those things any idiot can buy and install, and consequently, you have every idiot buying and installing them. I had a neighbour who ran his on an extension cord that ran out the bottom of the garage door itself and plugged into a kitchen outlet at the back of the house through a slightly cracked window. The best part? When he installed the opener he drilled through the CLOSED garage door at the bottom to run the cord! Wish I was there the first time he used it...
