Hey, I didn't know that someone had replied to my reply to rant on it. I'm not saying that things should last forever because I like new things (nothing beats that new electronics smell right out of the box). But what is stupid is that things don't last any longer then a year like if you pay $300 for an I pod and it lasts a year that’s an expensive toy and a real bad investment.

If you want quality you need to buy it from an independent company that hand builds their products. For example THD guitar amps are all hand made as they are needed. They carry a full warrantee and last forever. If you have a problem with it they take the time to fix it for you and make sure its working well for you. I guess those products could be classified as "quality".

I don’t think the problem is just quality but also the fact that technology tries to get better and better. Like for example take DVD's this media version has only become popular over the last 6 years and already LG is trying to push for HDDVD. Is this just a way to put out a new technology that wont fly? CD's for instance started as LD, then to the common 5inch format of today then Sony tried to put out MD, SACD, HDCD all of these did not become the next big standard in technology. CD's have stuck because they sound better and last longer then tapes or records (although I really love the sound of an LP). The only bit of new technology that has really stuck in the music world is the MP3 player for obvious reasons (but I hate the thin sound of MP3 or any compressed form). I think this whole techno push by the big names on HDDVD is just going to be another flop. Instead of pushing for HD this and HD that why not correct the problems of jitter found in all CD drives.

Anyway, I do think there are some products that last longer then others and some that perform a little better but they all have the life span of about 1 year... so quality blah!!! It’s all the same crap in the same box!

Well i don't think the fridge is a GREAT example because it still fufills it's fundamental design, it keeps things cold. It's doens't need to be replaced as long as it does that. Certain objects may be updated and upgraded very quickly but thats no reason to skip out on quality. For example if you go and buy a bigscreen tv, theres no reason to skip out on quality seeing as how yes a newer one will emerge, but why get something thatll break when you can't afford the new one or repairs?

I have a computer from the nineties running windows 98. Although it's old and only has 64MB of RAM it still works well and I still use it, due to the fact that when we bought it wasn't some old junker. What you said is a prime example of one of todays problems, people always want more even if it's not necessary.

The ipod is a prime example of that. You said,
quote:
Ipods only last a year but theres a better one out each year, sure its a bit costly but worth it

To what point? A mentality such as that leads to extreme amounts of wast. Be content with what you have. I'm not saying its a sin to upgrade but seriously whats the pt of upgrading every few months. You just waist money and create electronic waste also.

When I bought a new comp. to replace the old one it had been after some 7 ish yrs. The new one is light yrs ahead of the old one. I'm pretty sure you don't go out and buy a new computer every time they come up with a way to add more RAM or hardrive space. Thatd be insane, and it falls right along in place with the ipod philosophy.

Well, that was my rant for today. Maybe what I said doesn't make sense and maybe it does, that's for you to judge.

quote : There is no such thing as "quality" anymore. If there were to be "quality" goods built, then the product would/should last forever. What happens when a product last forever? Nobody needs to buy more than one. When the manufacture starts loosing profit because there is no need for someone to buy more, then they go out of business.

Manufactures build stuff cheap and simple so they will fail, and people will have to go out and buy more. It is a direct cause of the industrial revolution.

im just bored so im going to rant about what you said...
That sounds like a good hypothesis but when you think about it, alot of things dont need to be made to last forever because they will be outdated and useless, all electronics like computers, vcr's and walkmen get a newer better model each year and eventually get replaced, why buy an expensive one that will last forever? Secondly, this is only from theory seeing as im 16, but my gramma has a really old fridge that was made to last forever, by todays standard its an old piece of junk. Would you use a computer from the 90's? + If something is going to be replaced why not be cheap? Ipods only last a year but theres a better one out each year, sure its a bit costly but worth it. Also, im pretty sure the industrial revolution was a good thing.

Im sorry to whoever wastes theyr time reading thing :)

haha! true! It's annoying how manufacturers put a 1 year warrenty on things and you know that after you have owned it for 13 months it will break. Extended warrenty!!! ahh Don't get me started haha. When I buy something the first thing I do is make sure it works then I take it apart and measure key components and take note of the crappy parts they use (probably the first to fail). I think there is nothing wrong with making a few mods here and there (most of the time I wait until the warrenty is up... hey you know you pay $60 for a DVD player that cost them $8 to mass-produce, package, and ship. I think i might as well get my money's worth out of the over pricing. Besides nothing like a few mods here and there to really make it your own :D and after the one year warentee is up if you have the know how why not do your own repares. One of my friends who does repares fixed a TV that the warrenty had just ran out on. he fixed it and but when he went to put it back together he accidentally broke the tube! he bought the guy a new TV and a few weeks later the new TV was struck by lightening so the guy brought it in to get it checked for the insurance company. The insurance company bought him a new one so my friend just swapped out the perfectly good tube from the one that the lightening hit and its been in his basement ever since. I know this is not a mod but its still sweet to do your fixes when you have the know how!

Just a story for you :D

Everything is made in china or japan so there is no "higher quality" you get what get because our western culture wants everything for as little $$$ as possible. It's all the same junk in the same plastic box!

Nowadays with everything being a commodity, quality goods are available very cheaply. DVD players are a perfect example. There are a million no-name brands, often for well under $40 with the same quality and features of those costing 10x as much. Don't expect any warranty support, but that doesn't seem to matter much to people anymore.

On the other hand, some things never change. When dealing with hardware (as an example) I can instantly tell a cheap "made in China" bolt for a quality piece made locally. It's not something you can blame Chinese manufacturers for though, since they produce a part based on what the client wants to pay.
