Actually some of these systems (although not the cheap one in this case) has a built in biometrics system that also checks for body heat and/or a pulse, so slapping a gummi bear over THOSE type of sensors wouldn't work. It also wouldn't work if you cut off somebody's thumb and tried to use the severed digit. The biometric ones are still surprisingly cheap. I recall seeing one somewhere that was around $150 USD.

At our shop, we have some left over IBM PCMCIA Smart Card readers and associated cards. The package comes with a warning that says if you encrypt the HD and then loose the card, your data is not recoverabe. It then goes on to say "This behaviour is by design". Well, duh.
