Posted - Jul 19 2007 : 4:25:56 PM From what I understand most if not all car electrical systems have voltage filtration to reduce noise to the electronics.
On my friend's old 86 Toyota, I'm not confident in its ability to filter with all the added modifications he will be doing.
From what I remember in the Navy, a filter can be as basic as an inductor and capacitor in parallel to the voltage source (I remember the word shunt being used).
Is this as simple as it gets? Does it need to be more complex/accurate/faster for electronics?

Posted - Sep 13 2007 : 09:31:12 AM Looks a bit like a standard CDI box with a few extras. Most of the digital boxes (ie. Crane HI-6) on the market are comparable, but with fewer output channels. Probably has multiple spark output during lower RPM operation, with a higher output single spark at higher RPM. |

I thought it was an ignition amplifier but from reading it it sounds like its in more control than that. It looks like it wires into the igniter into the wires post IGT from the ECU and to the wires going to the primary coils. It says it uses capacitors to charge up the coil faster, and it also has its own transistors that do what I think the OE ingnitor ones do, but these paralleled in squeeze as much time discharging as possible. It isn't using its own tach signal so I think it is just programmed to allow spark to be slightly longer after the IGT singal (grounding) for that coil from the ECU goes away (actually comes back to high I think). I don't think its higher voltage spark or "stronger", it just allows for the coil to "charge" up faster and thus gives it time to make the spark last longer. It may raise spark voltage a bit maybe if it raises dwell time maybe? |

What do you think you'd find in the HKS DLI? How does it work? I think the OE igniter has over voltage protection, so some how its wired in around that, and I imagine if its simple its just boosting the 12vdc going to the primary coil to a slightly higher voltage, or missfires are not from lack of voltage but from heat, so its just raising the amperage. |

Posted - Jul 25 2007 : 4:45:15 PM It's the placibo effect. If you open it up, you will find nothing more then a MOV and a few capacitors.
The Megasquirt has both hardware and software adjustments for ignition inputs and injector outputs. |

Posted - Jul 23 2007 : 5:49:58 PM no problems yet, its just I want to get into some projects more and thought to do it. I also saw an op amp circuit or something of the nature to regulate voltage, I guess there would be many solid state circuits/methods to go about this.
He is probably going to run a megasquirt in the future, i'm not sure if the injector and ignition outputs have voltage correction maps in the software.
I went to the Apexi garage sale way way back and bought their "hiper voltage stabilizer" or whatever it its called because it was on clearance and I felt a difference after install, though I suppose it could be placebo. It has ground plugs and it connects to the + and - terminals of the battery. I suppose it could be advanced enough to know when the alternator is on or off and that closes the filtration circuit, or it always drains on the battery, I donno.
