Posted - Apr 23 2005 : 04:51:32 AM Hi all , i have something and i need some information !! you know the "Timing Light" , the bright light that mechanic use to adjust the ignition timing .... that tool connected to the car battery and to the spark plug cable from outside , i need to know how does the device feels the electric current without tuching the wire in the cable . i am thinking of making a simple device with a white or blue LED , but i need to know that idea. So , anyone can help ?? Thanx alot

Posted - Apr 26 2005 : 09:31:59 AM Most timing lights use an inductive pickup. It's basically a coil of wire that you clip around the spark plug wire. When the plug fires, it generates a low voltage in this coil, which then triggers the light.
You can easily do the same thing with an LED by wrapping a few coils around the spark plug wire, amplifying the signal, and outputting directly to an LED.
