 led brake and taillight circuit help

I would like to make a led stop and taillight circuit. the parts I have are 5mm superbright led rated at 1.9-2.2volts, 20ma, and I have some 1k ohm resistor. I plan to use one resistor on the taillight circuit and 2 on the stop light circuit so it could be more brighter. I am still in the planning stage and I think by pressing the brake pedal will cost the current to power up the taillight circuit when I dont want it to. any idea will be greatly appreciated. thank you in advance

You need to check the service manual for your car. Some cars use the current drawn by the brake lights to determine whether a bulb replacement is necessary. If the current drawn is too low, then your BRAKE warning light will come on.

However, essentially you need to just use the LED resistor calculator at http://www.aaroncake.net/electronics/math.htm to determine your series resistor.

Be aware that one LED will likely NOT provide enough illumination. Also, your modifications will not not be approved by the proper authorities, so if you were ever rear ended, your insurance company may invalidate your claim.

There are commercial LED replacement bulbs available for only a few dollars, which are DOT approved.
