I recently bought a mid 70's DJ-5 Jeep, commonly known as Postal Jeeps or ice cream trucks.

The turn signal assembly doesnt work on it and I dont really want to shell out $30 bucks for a universal unit. I would like to build one to try to keep it cheap.

Is the turn signal flasher all I need aside from some wiring and a switch? Or is there more supporting components involved with it?

I was also thinking I could just rig up a 555 or two to pulse at about 1-2hz which would in turn drive a pair of transistors which would drive a pair of relays which would activate the appropriate lights on the outside of the jeep.

Is this a feasible way to do it? Or is there a more simple alternative?

The flasher units contain a bimetallic strip that is heated by the current the lamps draw. The strip moves to close a contact, then cools down and opens up...The cycle repeats. So it's a lot less high-tech then people think.

You could probably make one, but it would likely cost more then buying a premade unit...$30 is awefully high. Normally they're about $10 or so, or you could go to the wreckers and get one (they would probably give it to you for free).
