u said that u made an electric go-cart. i bin thinkin about makin 1 to get me home from my m8s house when i am 2 drunk 2 drive my car. what motors did u use? remember i am in england, and all the shops are crap or expensive! i will use a car battery or a smaller 12 volt. i need to be able to get up hills. i can roll home but need at least 2 hours drive time. your newest go-cart looks good, but i need electric, as petrol will piss the police off a bit too much!

SkinnyBoy: Top speed was very high since the motor was geared quite tall. The problem was (as you suggested) controlling it to that top speed. Rarely could I get it over 40KM/H because it was too unstable. A typical automotive starting type battery (lead acid, thin plate) would run the car off and on for half an hour or so.

luke: Increasing the speed of a wheelchair is easy. Just install a bigger motor and a larger controller to start. Then up the voltage (a 2nd or third battery in series). You probably won't be able to use any of the stock electronics with the higher voltage, and your on your own for a charger. But no, I doubt it would be street legal.

aaron (or anyone), how easy is it to increase the speed of an electric wheelchair? any idea if it's legal to drive them at high speed on the road? I dunno what batteries they have, but surely if u put 1 or 2 car batteries on 1 u could get 1 going pretty quick! All that would be needed is a speed controller and a sound system! (and a fucking good helmet!)

Aaron, how fast would you guesstimate this electric go-cart went? also, how long did the battery (s?) last, or didn't you even manage to control it for long enough to find out? :) :D lol

I used a starter motor from a Honda Civic. It was wildly powerful, but very difficult to control. Basically had two speeds, "on" and "smoke tires". Not very practicle. I would suggest looking at some online electronics surplus places such as MECI. They normally have the wheel motors from electric bikes pretty cheap, and shipping isn't too bad even if it is coming from the US. Most also have the speed control available, which will make the process and finished product easier and better.

Also, check out http://www.aaroncake.net/features/ . The current feature includes a link with instructions on subscribing to the Electric Vehicle mailing list. I highly recommend doing this if you can handle the > 100 messages daily. Lots of electric go-kart ideas and discussion.
